Remember the time when Cassie from POWER RANGERS IN SPACE was one of the leads in a Hong Kong Action Film? Here she is in EXTREME CHALLENGE (2001) directed by action veteran Wei Chung. Guess all that training with Koichi Sakamoto paid off.

1969's NINJA SCOPE (3D ADVENTURE MOVIE: AKAKAGE) has some novel tokusatsu elements, but it didn't work for me sadly. If anything, I kinda wished I was watching the 80s anime instead. The tree fight was kinda peak though.

Finally finished NO OTHER CHOICE last night, and it just might be Park Chan-wook's best film. It's an absolute masterpiece that will eviscerate you with a smile, a sneer, and a shudder.

With the passing of SAM NEILL, I think it's a good time to remind people to check out EVENT HORIZON & IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS - 2 fantastic horror films that he anchored that featured phenomenal practical effects. RIP.

Saw THE QUEEN OF BLACK MAGIC (RATU ILMU HITAM) for the 1st time this week and it was amazing! Well-paced with impeccable practical effects, it's a classic of Indonesian cinema that I wish I knew about sooner. Suzanna's performance deserves so much praise as well. This is a must watch!

Halfway through KAMEN RIDER V3 and it's been a fun rid so far. Shiro Kazumi is one helluva protagonist, but the star of the show (for me) are the Kaijin! They've got great designs and I love how the show tries to make them creepy / unsettling. Great stuff so far!

The stuntperson is the lifeblood of the henshin hero medium, and no one embodied that more that Kenji Ohba. Every life-and-death stunt he did, every battle he won, and every pose he made was screen fighting action in its purest form. Another JAC legend becomes immortal in us all.

It was a Wuxia Weekend for me with 2 Female-led films, but honestly, 1971's LADY WITH A SWORD (鳳飛飛 - Feng Fei Fei, our lead heroine) was the better of the two. This was a thrilling film that deserves more eyes on it.

Had a great mail haul yesterday. Got some Jazz / Fusion CDs and the Missus bought me a Shaw Brothers wuxia movie!!!

A great weekend for action. Rewatched MAGNIFICENT WARRIORS and it just might be one of Michelle Yeoh's best. But last night's first-time watch of NEW ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN was so lit in the best way possible. Thanks @sapphicgiallo.bsky.social for the rec!

RETURN OF THE ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN (獨臂刀王) is the DEFINITION of a sequel that blows it's fantastic first outing out of the water. Ignore the haters because this film has no business being this good while having so much contempt for 武林 in all its forms. Goddamn!

JADE TIGER (1977) isn't for everybody (go see Letterboxd), but I enjoyed its pivot away from swordplay. It's very much a wuxia spy thriller that aims to deconstruct the pride, chivalry & heroism of the genre in ways that THE BLADE would later inherit. And that ending is epic.

Remember the time when Akared from Gorenger lost his arm in WW2 and decided to learn martial arts from Sonny Chiba but then found out he was no match for Etsuko Shihomi? Me neither. Anyways, check out SHORINJI KENPO if you dig fantastic action with WW2 revisionism🤮.

Rewatched DEMON CITY SHINJUKU (1988) last week and this OVA still slaps. Yoshiaki Kawajiri & Madhouse are such a powerful combination. Made me sad that I used to have the VHS of this many moons ago, but hey, that's what Blurays are for.

Checked out 1966's DRAGON SHOWDOWN (怪竜大決戦) from @shoutstudios.bsky.social's Classic Tokusatsu Collection last nite, and it's literally a ninja kaiju film based on the legend of JIRAIYA! Featuring neat fights, a tight story, & awesome suitmation, this is a must-watch for EVERY TOKU FAN!

Man, @filmsradiance.bsky.social's release of TATTOOED LIFE (刺青一代) from 1965 was a banger last week. Full of color, drama, and life, the film is an absolute testament to Suzuki's style and is a must-watch for anyone interested in Nikkatsu's brand of yakuza films. This is a must-watch!

1983's DUEL TO THE DEATH (生死決) is the wuxia equivalent of FIST OF FURY, but instead of the usual 日本鬼子 fare, it offers a sly takedown of jiang hu that might make Jin Yong proud. Though its depiction of Japan isn't as good as a Toei film, it remains a masterpiece that EVERYONE should seek out.
