Heinrich borrowed from a relatively large number of French and German works of the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, yet he was quite original in adapting the material to his own purposes. His two tournaments draw from those in "Parzival", Hartmann's "Erec", and perhaps Ulrich's "Lanzelet"; and the most likely of two possible sources for the tankard episode is Robert Biquet's "Lai du cor". The Assiles campaign is largely Heinrich's own invention, but he got the wild-woman encounter from "Wigalois" and the Reimambram incident from the Harpin account of Hartmann's "Iwein". The chief sources for the Gasozein story were "Les enfances Gauvin", Chretien's "Lancelot", and "Lanzelet", none of which are followed very closely. Although the bridle tale is based primarily on Paien de Maisières's "La mule sans frein", the initial conflict of the two sisters is patterned after a similar situation in "Iwein". The probable source for the beheading game is "Le livre de Caradoc", and the magic-sword episode may
have been influenced by "Le chevalier à l'epée".

It's been two years since I woke up early for the Summer Solstice, went to Lake Michigan for the first time, waded in it a little while, went to Chinatown and hung out by the river in Ping Tom Park, and then saw Fall Out Boy in Wrigley Field. I think about that trip constantly, I need to go back.
