Open letter reads:

Dear Premier Minns,

We call on you to deliver on Labor’s 2023 election promise and declare the Great Koala National Park. The full 176,000 hectares assessed must be protected to save the 12,000 koalas that live there.

This was Labor’s biggest environmental commitment – yet since your election, more than 10,000 football fields of forests have been cut down, despite Labor’s promises and overwhelming public support for their protection.

It’s also costing taxpayers dearly.

State-owned Forestry Corporation NSW lost $72 million over the last four years from its hardwood division, which includes native forest logging, while repeatedly breaching environmental laws – costs largely covered by the public.

The current system is failing both nature and the economy.

Declaring the full park will protect forests while securing jobs. Frontier Economics modelling shows that transitioning statewide to a plantations-based timber industry can create 15% more jobs for timber workers and deliver on the rising demand for timber.

It’s time to end native forest logging and create secure jobs for timber workers and regional communities in high value wood manufacturing from sustainable plantations. The government must work with First Nations to expand Indigenous Ranger jobs and advance land handback.

Protecting all 176,000 hectares would cut carbon emissions, attract global visitors to a future World Heritage-listed park, and secure wildlife-rich forests identified by your government’s koala survey.

This is a defining moment – one of economic renewal, community protection and environmental leadership. For years, communities have called for this park.

You promised it, now it's time to deliver it.
