Today is wildlife Monday in my garden. This morning the Pilated woodpecker had a buffet breakfast on a birch log. She was at it for over an hour. And this hawk just landed on the roof of my car. 🌱 #PNW 🪶

I believe this is a young Cooper’s hawk. Beautiful beige, clay colored markings. He’s perched on my car’s roof rack ( not too far from my bird feeders. )

The orange felon is threatening
Canada with more tariffs because of wildfire smoke drifting to the US.
For context, Canada sent fire crews to the US when Southern California was being ravaged by catastrophic blazes.

I am so sad. My California poppies are a bust this year! I had a huge drift, and now I’ve only got a few. I’m thinking it’s the mulch last year that buried the seeds! Don’t know. My garden (former dead lawn) is only 4 years old, and every year it’s so different- what comes, what goes. 🌱 # PNW

I love this little guy. Oregon Sunshine! I went to the native nursery to get native rhododendrons &couldn’t resist. They were out of littles, so only got one. AND pacific Wax Myrtle…&snowberries. Oh- I picked up a Cascara tree (1 gal)! That’s why I should order online and pick up! Ha! 🌱#PNW

I’ve got some Lacy Phacelia popping up in random spots. So last season I never opened an order of native seeds from Northwest Meadowscapes! When I found it- I just threw out seeds wherever. I guess I’m a chaos Gardner now! 🌱 #PNW

From Territorial Seeds: Phacelia tanacetifolia The list of benefits that cover crops can offer a garden is extensive, and Lacy Phacelia is unique in that its predominant contribution is its pollinator-attracting power. On our farm, stands of Lacy Phacelia are a constant buzz of bee activity like no other plant with the exception, perhaps, of buckwheat in full bloom. This fast-growing annual wildflower produces very attractive, ferny foliage growing 2‒3 feet tall and topped with fascinating blue flowers that unfurl in a fiddlehead shape. As a cover crop, Lacy Phacelia aggressively out-competes weeds and will absorb excess nitrates and calcium in the ground. At our farm, we have found that this crop conditions the top few inches of soil better than almost any other cover crop we've grown.

Last fall, I threw out a seed packet of Rudbeckia occidentalis, or western coneflower, and got ONE plant. (Probably because I’ve got crap dry soil). I was so excited to see it! So cool!

The house next door is being demoed. The city plans to plant a rain garden: (the lot floods).Bad news is- public access all along my flank. Good news - they need to raise funds and expect it to take a couple of years. 🌱 # PNW. Time to plant a native hedge. I do have some ninebarks started.

Most tree service companies around me will deliver for free. They love to off load their wood chips. Some also have piles at their yard where you can fill up your own bags. (Ok, I needed a LOT! lol)

My baby Ray Hartman Ceanothus survived the winter; I want to train it into a small tree like I had in California. 🤷🏽‍♀️ it has one long leader so 🤞🏼 #PNW 🌱

California home. I loved this ceanothus trained as a small tree. It came that way from the nursery. I miss my de la mina verbena. It was just too cold here.
