Got some pub in the APTA newsletter today. I have a lot of thoughts on YouTube’s role in the transit advocacy ecosystem, not to mention urbanism advocacy more broadly. There’s a bit of it in here, but there is SO MUCH to say about it aptapassengertransport.com/four-youtube...

Ray Delahanty had "no idea there were so many people interested in urbanism and transit" until he started a YouTube channel called CityNerd.
But 48 million views and 412,000 subscribers later, he's seen transit's connections to "public health, quality of life, affordability, and climate impact-things that people care deeply about and animate their thinking and politics."

different geographies, it's fine. But I'm always a little uncomfortable enthroning the median as some sort of normal, relatable state of things when we live in an age of such vast income and wealth inequality. I made this point in my recent video on the homelessness crisis, but it's worth repeating here: the variance in household incomes and the variance in housing costs per square foot, within a given geography, are simply not the same animal. In that video, I used Los Angeles as an example:

I'm not trying to say people on Threads are inherently stupid. Irony can be hard to pick up on, and it can certainly be hard to execute well. If it's too obvious, then it isn't funny; if it's not obvious enough, people will take you literally and be mad about it. I'm not even immune — for example, I've been looking at this next one for hours and I still don't even know if this person is being earnest or not:

As someone claiming to be a city nerd, this is possibly the most uninformed comment about how transportation evolves in cities. This approach was tried under Robert Moses and destroyed the fabric of NY.
