This whole "well, we put a watermark" response is utter nonsense that represents a willful misunderstanding of how images spread online. They don't have to be doing any of this!!
It is almost blinding to see such wholesome Americanness written into a government document, as we now watch political favoritism and punishment be codified in the rules of places like NSF instead.
When we talk about the current demolishing of NSF, we think a lot about the loss of research and scientific progress (which are of course very important). But in its founding documents, NSF was also set up to be an equalizer.
The ASW even had its own alumni association for awhile. It created careers, hobbies, and just a better understanding of the universe in countless kids.
But more than that, I found this page, written by an attendee of the very first Astro-Science Workshop *in 1963*, which was also funded by NSF. By the time I attended, U.S. tax-payer money had supported nearly 45 years of training Chicago high school students in astronomy oxford-observatory.org/asw/
As a high schooler, I hadn't considered why or how the Astro-Science Workshop existed or who funded it. But now, as a professor, I assumed it was probably the result of an NSF grant. So I looked it up and, yep, there it is, the exact grant that kicked off my scientific career.
