This is a helluva piece by @laurajedeed.bsky.social. It's a truly riveting, often hysterical journey through the Great American State Fair and getting stuck in a storm with the MAGA masses. Stop whatever you are doing and read this right now:

Here’s the thing: the announcement told us to shelter in our cars, but most fairgoers did not drive in—in fact, we were encouraged not to because of parking limitations. It told us to seek shelter in nearby buildings, but all those buildings are either museums or government buildings and it is 8:00 PM on a national holiday so no, that wasn’t happening either. It told us to check social media for further updates, but the fair’s accounts had not even acknowledged the closure, never mind provided additional information. And we’d been explicitly told that the closure would be temporary. Why would anyone go home?

The only place for these tens of thousands to go, realistically, was the streets outside the event, which is exactly what happened: a crush of bodies clustered at the entrance points and choking off traffic for blocks. Everyone is just as exposed to the elements out here as we were in there, except now we are angrily bunched together with nothing to do but endure the storm and stew about the stupidity of it all. The National Guard clusters in groups of four and five at the outskirts of this throng, but they are brutally outnumbered by thousands of disgruntled fairgoers.

These ingredients can only make a few things, and none of them are good.

It is a chaotic scene on the National Mall, as several hundred people refuse to leave despite an order to evacuate because of severe storms approaching. An officer is sternly repeating the evacuation order over a bullhorn, and the crowd is booing. Many have begun chanting "U.S.A., U.S.A." One man blamed the situation on "liberals in the weather service," adding, "I think this is baloney?"

CBS’ Ratings Crumble: CBS News on Tuesday touted the tiniest year-over-year audience gain in the second quarter for Tony Dokoupil’s “CBS Evening News,” but a closer look at the numbers reveals a grim picture at the Bari Weiss-led network. Despite averaging 3.9 million viewers in Q2—up 1% year-over-year, according to Nielsen—the broadcast still posted its second-worst second quarter on record, remaining below the 4 million viewer threshold. And the network’s viewership problems appear to be getting worse. Last month, “Evening News” delivered its lowest-rated June of the 21st century in total viewers. Elsewhere, "CBS Mornings,” fared no better, sinking to its lowest-rated month in the program's history with fewer than 1.7 million total viewers. The morning show also posted its weakest June ever in the 25-54 age demo, averaging just 269,000 viewers and marking the sixth consecutive month it has failed to top 300,000 viewers.

A new course had been plotted, and the country would be moving MAGA-ward — both in politics and beyond it. The heavy-handed safetyism of the pandemic era was over, as well as diversity, equity and inclusion. The border would be closed and perhaps tens of millions of people deported. Domineering masculinity and throwback gender norms would reign again in Washington and beyond. And unchecked capitalism would be so fully unleashed that bankers were already feeling empowered to throw around slurs again.

What happened? One explanation is that Mr. Trump simply squandered his advantage. His tariff crusade produced a burst of inflation. DOGE was a dud. His invasion of American cities in the name of immigration enforcement was so violent and aggressive, it seems to have alienated even those voters who wanted more serious action at the border. And his attacks on foreign countries exposed American military vulnerability, drove a big spike in the price of oil and other products and lost him any claim he might have had to being an antiwar president (always a dubious claim but a relatively widely held one nevertheless).

What exactly prompted O’Leary and Fox to embark on this unusual apology tour remains unclear, but it’s a safe bet that a legal threat was involved. Once O’Leary publicly acknowledged he had no evidence for his allegations, Fox was left in an uncomfortable position. A spokesperson for the network declined to comment, although people familiar with the matter indicated to Status that no money changed hands. Spokespeople for O’Leary and O’Leary Ventures did not respond to requests for comment. Representatives for Alliance for a Better Utah, Elevate Strategies, and those specifically targeted by O’Leary’s Fox appearances also did not respond to requests for comment.

2/ -Weiss has ZERO broadcasting experience. -The 3 correspondents make accusations AND revealed specific & credible examples of editorial interference. -Alfonsi complained & was fired months later. -Journalists grumbling? Weiss is meddling with content AND the ratings for 2 newscasts are tanking.

Ms. Weiss, who had virtually no broadcasting experience before taking over in October, has reshaped CBS News in occasionally chaotic ways, recently firing the leadership of the network’s flagship, “60 Minutes.” Several on-air correspondents who were fired later accused her of editorial interference, which she has denied.

Mr. Ellison and his deputies are weighing whether to put Ms. Weiss in charge of CNN, which is far larger than CBS News and is a major profit center, two people familiar with their thinking said. He has remained supportive of Ms. Weiss, despite grumbling from journalists.

The NYT is out with a new CBS/CNN piece that has some interesting tid-bits including this: More evidence that Anderson Cooper left 60 Minutes because he didn't want to work for Bari Weiss. This 🧵includes a few other things that jumped out.

Anderson Cooper, the channel’s biggest star, has told colleagues at CNN that he does not want to work for Ms. Weiss, two people familiar with his remarks said. Mr. Cooper, who overlapped with Ms. Weiss at CBS as a correspondent at “60 Minutes,” left that show this spring after 20 years.
