Before the tuxedo, there was white tie.

White tie was the standard high-formal type of dress in Western circles for evening events. Tailcoats, which were jacketed with a cropped-at-the-waist component and a long "skirt" were staples of this mode until around the end of the First World War.

Tailcoats of this kind were actually not typically made to be buttoned, and other variants were actually made without buttons.

Left side:

Detachable / starched collar attached to shirt with studs.

"White tie" hence the name.

Velveted fabric making up lapels / facings.

Cream - colored / off-white waistcoat with wide / open chest (notice the low-buttoning point) to emphasise the starched "bib" on the shirt. Also serves the function of obscuring the pants - shirt contact area.
