7 years ago, the localist slogan 光復香港時代革命 (Liberate HK, Revolution of Our Times) became not so fringe anymore. What had never really appeared on the 'normal' munsuen channels started flooding them immediately in the days following what happened in Yuen Long and Sheung Wan on 21 July 2019

7 years ago today, many in the peaceful march in the morning had aimed to finish at the HK Laison Office in Sai Ying Pun in the evening. They arrived and a crowd gathered around Sheung Wan. And then, the riot police showed up.

7 years ago today, an uneventful (in the grand scheme of things) pro-democracy protest began on HK Island in the morning. You know the drill: gigantic crowds filling the main arteries of the island, makeshift Lennon walls on anything that has a flat surface, including police water-filled barriers...

7 years ago today, we saw the start of the eventual complete breakdown of public trust in the MTR. The corporation did little to stop the violence that was happening at its station, continued to run trains into Yuen Long while a full attack was happening, etc. It would get worse in August.

7 years ago today, HKers had proof the police was colluding with the triad. The gang attack on commuters at Yuen Long MTR station (a mild form of state-sponsored terrorism?) was a step-up in the government's reaction to the pro-democracy protests and would cause some interesting ripples. Waves even.

More of a birds of a feather situation.

Ok, I wasn’t hallucinating that I saw him on the periphery of HK Twitter back in the old days

His work has been covered in the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Vox, and The Federalist, as well as numerous local outlets. He formerly worked as an international economist for USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service and currently lives in Lexington, Kentucky, with his wife and three daughters. They formerly lived in Hong Kong.
