Good question! A firm normally has a large exploration lease which they can swap for a smaller mining lease if they've found a valuable resource. If the mine peters out, the firm has knowledge of the old exploration field and may seek a new mining lease known to have resources.

A generation ago I wrote an alternative history of Baltic States in Strine. Even in 2004, people complained/lamented that Aussies don't speak that way anymore.

Balts Meandering off the Beaten Track of History

Just to give it a burl, reckon we should suss out the Balts. Lithuanians perzackly. Had a blue with some Jerries called the Teutonic Knights. Hard yakka but they creamed them in the end.

About a century later a mob called the Jagiellons appear on the scene. Gedimin and Olgierd were fit as Mallee bulls and fenced off quite a selection. Olgierd's son Jagiello, after becoming a God botherer, married Queen Jadwiga of Poland. They've barely had time to have a naughty when J's cousin Witold, as cross as a frog in a sock, spits the dummy.
Blow me down if Jagiello, the mad bastard, doesn't say "No worries!" and makes this relo his offsider. Kangaroos loose in the top paddock if you ask me. Still, the two tall poppies go after the Teutonic knights and put a gap in 'em, again.

After this you know the drum. For donkey's years (1410-1772) things go well, then the Russians and the Brandenbergers go berko. From then 'til now with a couple of gaps (that mongrel Napoleon, 1920-40, 1991-present) the Poles and Balts are squashed flatter than a pav. Fair dinkum, no wonder so many became reffos.

So reckon we can take a meander off the beaten track of history so she'll be apples?
One possie is to have the Teutonic Knights win one of their barnies. Pig's arse! Square-heads have had enough oppos in history to come the raw prawn, let's not give them a freebie.
A second yarn has Jagiello knock back becoming a Bible basher and so never gets to see Jadwiga's map of Tassie. The alliance of Poland and Lithuania comes a gutser and the two countries are on their Pat Malone. History's done a yewy.

This could be a Bonzer Thingo. History is chocka with yabber about neighbouring states who both crack on with healthy chiacking. The Mexicans and Cockroaches in Godzone. Pommies and Frogs. Balts and Poles each trying to out-do the other, busy as cats burying shit, could leave Krauts and the Russians in the shade.
