Funny you should say that... Back in 1900 Capt Pryse Pryse Pryse (no, honestly) went hunting. The fox went to earth (dived into a burrow). Pryse³ was miffed, stuck his arm down the hole, and dragged the fox out by its tail. It bit him. He died in agony some days later from rabies. Karma?

The burial of Captain Pryse, eldest son of Sit Pryse Pryse, Bart., of Plas Gogerddan, who died on Tuesday from blood poisoning following the effects of a bite from a fox, took place yester- day afternoon at th Church of St. John, Penrhyncoch. The funeral was attended by hundreds of persons from all parts of North Cardiganshire. The service was entirely in Welsh, and was con- ducted by the Rev. George Blackwell, curate-in- cliarge. By the expressed wish of the family the ceremony throughout was marked by unusual simplicity, though some two score wreaths, received from all classes, were an eloquent testimony to the love and esteem in which the family, and especially the deceased, was held by the people.

#familyhistory time again. I've just had a reply from the RAF Museum about an enquiry I made about my grandfather's service at the Central Flying School in WW1. They had a note that he had influenza in November 1918. That was the Spanish flu which killed 250,000 people. I dodged a bullet there...

Happy to help. It always feels a bit strange helping AFU buy important equipment, but I realised it's not very different to when people sent extra equipment to family and friends in the trenches in World War I! This was basically the 1915 equivalent of an observation drone!

Last week in the Machynlleth area, our colleagues Nick and Jane were out on the lookout, looking at cuddling sheets across the woods.
It's peaceful, manly work. Most of the time the boxes are empty, so even one that has been driven up the roof always feels a little special!
When they discover patients, they are usually in trouble, kind of short-term sleep, and can sleep fine through the view!

Last week in the Machynlleth area, our colleagues Nick and Jane were out surveying dormice, looking at hidden nest boxes across the forest.
It is patient, detailed work. Most of the time the boxes are empty, so finding one propped up inside always feels a little special!
When dormice are found, they are often in torpor, a type of short-term heavy sleep, and can sleep soundly throughout the inspection!
They are carefully handled under a trap, weighed, netted and recorded before being carefully returned to their nest box. For a second time they are put in a bag I say so they can be weighed safely and accurately. The dormouse is internationally rare and protected in the UK, which is why this work is carried out with such care.
The information collected helps us understand how populations are doing and helps shape how we manage forests, and how we work in them.
Even after years of inspection, that moment never gets old for Nick and Jane. It reminds them of how special these animals are. 🌿💚 See less
