Another big point in favor of the RPG hobby. You actually own a book, and pretty much everyone except WotC has PDFs available as well which can't be taken back from you.

You know what really bugs me these days? We can't own anything. Everything is a subscription service, like literally everything. You can't buy Microsoft Office, you have to purchase a subscription for a year. You literally have to pay for everything FOREVER. Isn't anyone else bothered by this?

Kelsey, the creator of Shadowdark, has insight into spellcasting mishaps when you roll a critical failure (natural 1) on focus checks. I've been adjudicating this incorrectly!

"I think the order of the entries in the rulebook provides a lot of clarity here.

P. 45 introduces the concept of spellcasting Critical Failures. In the 2nd paragraph there, under Wizard Spell, it tells you that, in addition to the regular penalties “You must also roll on the Wizard Mishap table corresponding to the spell’s tier.”

THEN if we look at p. 50, under the Focus rules, it says “if you critically fail on a check to maintain focus, treat it as a standard critical failure.”

To me, this is all cut and dried. You absolutely suffer a Wizard Mishap if you nat 1 on your spellcasting focus check. "

I'm happy to announce that all art on my next zine will be made by @kickholland.bsky.social! I've known Nick now for pert near 15 years and have always admired his work. The zine's art is in progress, but here are examples of his reduction print style. It really lends itself well to Shadowdark.
