Economist @bruegel.org | EU (single market) enlargement, productivity, FDI
All eyes are on #Iceland ahead of the 29 August #referendum on whether to reopen #EU accession talks. The outcome could resonate well beyond Reykjavík -particularly in #Norway, where opposition leaders are also calling for a renewed EU debate.
Manufacturing FDI – with its associated supply-chain linkages and direct job creation – offers the channel through which India can most rapidly expand formal manufacturing #employment and address its #innovation challenge.
Trade costs associated with sanitary and phytosanitary (#SPS) measures and technical barriers to trade (#TBT) have risen significantly, creating substantial economic burdens in trade between the #WesternBalkan countries and their main partner - the #EU.
Fantastic piece by my @bruegel.org colleagues on #carbon pricing beyond borders! Highly relevant for #EU neighbourhood countries and #candidates - their #CBAM exposure is particularly high, owing to their geography and tight #trade ties with the EU.
The promotion of #gas isn’t limited to #EU member states — it’s visible in the EU #neighborhood too. North Macedonia has reduced its coal-based electricity production, replacing it largely with gas (left), while investing heavily in new infrastructure projects (right).
The Turkish Energy sector is being very attractive for EU #FDI.
In this study, we draw attention of policymakers and investors to #WesternBalkan energy sector that is rich in #renewable potentials that remain highly untapped.
Last week, I had the pleasure of taking part in the panel "Europe from Rearmament to Renewal: Growth and Enlargement in an Age of Rupture" at the @lse-ei.bsky.social student annual retreat at Cumberland Lodge.
🌍#MarketCoupling would also increase the region's #price competitiveness and allow higher #export performance, while avoiding #CBAM.
3. Green transition in WB is behind. Though #Albania has 100% renewable electricity generation mix🌊, coal dependence is still high. Solar potential is higher in the WB than the EU. WB and EU have complementary temporal patterns of wind 🌬️, making WB energy sector - very attractive for FDI.
