I know that attributing political outcomes to cultural differences is problematic but I do think there’s merit to Colin Woodard’s “11 Nations” argument about the distinct origins of political institutions across different parts of the US.

This is some pretty incredible FAIR plan lore:

California legislators established the FAIR Plan in 1968 after insurers pulled out of devastated minority neighborhoods following the Watts uprising in Los Angeles. But as commercial insurers this decade have fled the state in the wake of destructive climate-triggered wildfires, FAIR has become the insurer of first resort for owners of multimillion-dollar properties in exclusive but fire-prone communities.

Under Measure ULA, Los Angeles taxes a $100M Bel-Air mansion the same as a new multifamily housing project in Palms that creates hundreds of new homes.

That makes absolutely no sense.

While our effort to fix Measure ULA and protect it from future attacks did not make it onto the November ballot, the underlying problem has not gone away.

Neither has our responsibility to fix it.

Credit where credit is due, this is a fair assessment of the generational divide by Marqueece Harris-Dawson.

One promising pool of voters is new residents. Those who have lived in Los Angeles for a relatively short time bring a distinctly different set of priorities than longtime Angelenos, a phenomenon observed last week by one of the city’s shrewder political minds, Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson.

At a recent event hosted by UCLA’s Blueprint magazine (and co-sponsored by CalMatters), Harris-Dawson asserted that L.A. newcomers often see the city differently. He noted, for instance, that many newcomers passionately favor increasing the density of Los Angeles housing, which might help reduce housing costs and even alleviate homelessness.

Those are laudable aims, but they overlook some of what has made Los Angeles appealing to generations of migrants. Harris-Dawson observed that his own family, like many of the city’s Black residents, came to Los Angeles from the South and settled here because it was the rare city that offered them the opportunity to buy a home, to have a yard, to enjoy space. For those families, single-family residences — and a city that values them — represent not wasted land but new opportunity. It is liberty itself.

For Guerra, centrist Democrats have been so successful at inclusion they have struggled to identify priorities.

“There are too many members of the coalition and there are too many of the members who have veto power, which then leads to paralysis,” Guerra said. “The paralysis is what’s led to the lack of innovation, the failure to pursue policies that make sense for the greater good.”

The dysfunction, he said, is particularly clear on housing.

“Every NIMBY in every neighborhood, in every council district, is like, ‘We want housing, but not here,’” Guerra said. “That, replicated everywhere, leads to paralysis and no housing.”

It has also led to renters becoming a rising political constituency — a big shift from the Bradley era, when homeowners were the city’s dominant voters.

But that doesn’t mean working-class Angelenos have a bigger voice now in L.A. politics. Instead, the middle class is splintering along generational lines.

Everything is priced in.

Don't even ask the question. The answer is yes, it's priced in. Think Amazon will beat the next earnings? That's already been priced in. You work at the drive thru for Mickey D's and found out that the burgers are made of human meat? Priced in. You think insiders don't already know that? The market is an all powerful, all encompassing being that knows the very inner workings of your subconscious before you were even born. Your very existence was priced in decades ago when the market was valuing Standard Oil's expected future earnings based on population growth that would lead to your birth, what age you would get a car, how many times you would drive your car every week, how many times you take the bus/train, etc. Anything you can think of has already been priced in, even the things you aren't thinking of. You have no original thoughts. Your consciousness is just an illusion, a product of the omniscent market. Free will is a myth. The market sees all, knows all and will be there from the beginning of time until the end of the universe (the market has already priced in the heat death of the universe). So please, before you make a post on wsb asking whether AAPL has priced in earpods 11 sales or whatever, know that it has already been priced in and don't ask such a dumb fucking question again.

Yeah I feel like LA doesn’t have that problem. In the neighborhoods that are already dense, no one’s necessarily going to miss the generic stucco style that higher rise supply is going to replace.
