reading Glenn Feldman's "The Disfranchisement Myth" for a class paper i'm working on, and found a quote that hits pretty hard in the current environment:

A quote from the previously mentioned book that reads: “As the Democrats worked out the political future of Alabama, they were self-consciously aware that they were engaged in a deadly serious enterprise, a project that would define and delimit politics for generations to come. They went about their work with the solemn realization that they were fashioning, not only a constitution that the state would live with for decades, but a whole way of doing politics. They were sanctifying the *politics of emotion* in Alabama, a politics based on the emotional appeals of race and Reconstruction to make sufficient numbers of the White majority forget their economic differences, It was a politics that salved wounded economic pride, sedated class tensions, and soothed the psyches of ordinary folks, who wanted, somehow, to feel superior to other people.” [pg. 44] The final two sentences are highlighted.

From a couple weeks ago, been too busy for cat pictures lately which is very sad
