How do you prepare for a part like this? Both physically and psychologically, are you doing research? Odysseus has been written about so much, and everybody has their interpretation. There’s so much you can do. How do you know what to do?

This might make me sound like a bit of a rube, but the answers I really needed were in the screenplay. Before I read the script, I reread The Odyssey, and I was listening to some lectures online about it, and then I read the script and from that moment on, I really used the script as my main source of material and inspiration. Because it’s really dense and there’s a lot going on in it. As actors, you’re trained in the theater that everything you need to know can be found by investigating the text, and I find Chris’s writing to be like that in the most helpful way. I talked to Chris about it while filming. We would each reread the script once or twice every weekend when we had a down day, just to level-set and prepare everything for the next week, because Monday mornings were like getting fired out of a cannon.
