Hooked it up, everything SEEMS to work, tho idk how much that tone pot is doing. The pickups change and make sound as intended, for now, and hopefully I never have to gaze upon my hideous first solder job ever again.
After a LOT of "that doesn't look like the YouTube videos..." I finally said fuck it and did a seriously ugly job. Idk if this is gonna lead to things working poorly, but here we are. Hurdle #3 is 100% making clean looking globs and soldering wires into them.
Okay I WAS able to desolder the pickup wires from the terminals on the pots, and use the sucker to remove some old solder. I ended up just cutting the ground wires free.
Yeah, even heating the pot directly this solder is also not coming off. This is becoming Hurdle #2 for sure...
Even at 750F whatever they used on these pots will melt okay but won't liquefy enough for me to remove it with the (cheapo) sucker. Oh well. You can see on the left non smooth blob where I tried to remove it. Likely unnecessary but I wanted to see if I could.
Idk if I should try to replicate that or do 4 individual ones for a.) practice b.) probably less chance of messing it up? Either way, next step is fire up the iron and desolder the grounds and pickups. Gonna test the "solder sucker" to keep it clean.
I took off the pickguard to verify something that didn't make sense at first. There should only have been 3 ground wires (pickup, pickup, and bridge) but there were 4. There's one screwed into the cavity, maybe some kind of conductive shielding paint? All 4 are soldered to a single point.
Hurdle #1 A jazz bass mounting plate did NOT fit the Les Paul style Mojotone 3 way switch I bought. I see now why they used the plate and switch from the other kit. So on the plate I had I cleared a path. Screw plate onto scrap wood and drill it out... with a bit slightly too small. It "worked".
My dad passed away last month, and I finally felt like it was time today to go get the one thing I ever wanted to inherit: his old '73 Gibson SG II. It's a strangely good sounding guitar for a 50 year old "budget" model. Made in USA.
