OUTSIDE THE SCOPE OF THIS PAPER

This year’s annual NWMS PGR symposium marks its fifth anniversary by taking inspiration from a familiar academic experience: getting lost down a research rabbit hole. Showcasing the research of postgraduates and ECRs both from the North West and from those interested in supporting Medieval Studies in the North West.

The symposium draws together scholars working on history, archaeology, art history, literature, and musicology. As well as ranging geographically from the sagas of Iceland to Polish saint’s lives; and chronologically from dark age British stone sculptures to the life records of a 15th century chronicler, as well as taking us into the present day to reflect on the afterlives of the Middle Ages through the work of Tolkien.

The symposium will take place in Chetham’s Library in Manchester and will feature an encounter with some of the library’s archival collections as well as lunch and snacks.

2026 marks a return to @chethamslibrary.bsky.social for our fifth anniversary and just as the NWMS was founded to give a voice to PGR’s, this year’s symposium is specifically about exploring the rabbit holes that define post graduate research, we hope to see you there!

2022 brought the first in person NWMS symposium. Held in Liverpool it marked a long running tradition of NWMS symposiums held in Liverpool.

Symposium is all about the rabbit holes. Bring the weird tangents, abandoned footnotes, and fascinating distractions that were outside the scope of your paper, the stuff your supervisor told you to cut but you couldn't stop thinking about.
We are open to any postgraduate student or ECR working on any topic whether that be medieval or medievalism and papers may come from any disciplinary background, whether that be history. literature, archaeology or any other.
