This week's #TidyTuesday data is about ecotourism in Australia! I focused on observations of orchids 🌷 and created a dashboard-style small multiple chart showing long-term and short-term trends 📊 #DataViz #RStats #ggplot2

Small multiples of line charts showing annual orchid observations for 24 genera in Western Australia from 2014–2024, with percentage change from 2023 to 2024. Most genera show long-term increases in observations despite mixed year-over-year changes, with the largest increases for Cyanicula (+143%), Pheladenia (+129%), and Spiculaea (+77%), while the largest declines are for Cryptostylis (−37%), Eriochilus (−36%), and Leporella (−23%).

A really interesting dataset about near death experiences (NDEs) for #TidyTuesday this week! 👻 Only about 7% of experiences classified as an NDE in the data, had a Greyson score (the scale for measuring NDEs) high enough to actually be classified as an NDE 📊 #RStats #DataViz #ggplot2

An experimental chart for #TidyTuesday this week on the topic of shipwrecks around Ireland! Putting time on the y axis to create a very long static scrolly chart with lots of annotations 📊 ft. bubble effect for points #RStats #ggplot2 #DataViz

Vertical dot plot showing shipwreck records from the Wreck Inventory of Ireland Database by year (1300–2020) and vessel type (Boat, Brigantine, Smack, Sloop, Ship, Barque, Brig, Steamship, Schooner, Other). Each dot represents a known or potential shipwreck with a known date and classification. A few early wrecks from the 1300s–1600s are annotated with historical events, followed by sparse records until numbers increase from the 18th century onward. Shipwrecks become much more frequent during the 19th century across most vessel types, with especially dense clusters for ships and other vessels. Steamship and submarine wrecks increase markedly around the periods of World War I and World War II. The chart's main message is that while weather and warfare caused shipwrecks throughout history, recorded wrecks rise substantially from the 18th century, peaking during the age of sail, steam, and the two World Wars.

Today's chart is a reminder that there is still some good news in the world 📊 This heatmap shows deaths from cervical cancer have dropped to 0 over a 5 year period in England for women aged 20-24. Deaths are also generally decreasing across all age groups. Made with #RStats and #ggplot2 #DataViz

Vertical markers highlight the introduction of the HPV vaccination programme for girls in 2008 and its extension to boys in 2019. The main message is that HPV vaccination has substantially reduced cervical cancer deaths in younger women: between 2020 and 2024, no cervical cancer deaths were recorded among women aged 20–24, the first time this occurred over a five-year period, with around 23 deaths expected without vaccination. The graphic states that HPV vaccination has prevented around 200 cervical cancer deaths in England.
