I am wondering whether Simeon Brown has hypnotised members of the press galley based on this from Audrey Young in her latest sycophantic puff piece. Btw I would use "creepy' rather than "disarming" #nzpol

Curiously, one thing about Brown’s level of focus is that it applies not just in the sense of concentrating on problems that need sorting.

It is a literal thing. He is so focused during our interview that he stares without blinking for minutes at a time. It is disarming.

Notwithstanding that, Opportunity scores poorly on conventional measures of intra-party democracy. Its constitution centralises power far more than those of Labour or the Greens.

The party’s board, only partially and indirectly elected by members, appoints the leader, while policy is largely the preserve of a policy committee. Party members are able to submit policy proposals to the committee, but it has “sole responsibility for developing the party’s policies”, and party members are “expressly prohibited from interfering with the development of policy”.

Nor does Opportunity have local or regional membership branches. In these respects, its internal structure more closely resembles right-libertarian Act than a conventional centrist party.

In yesterday's NZH Coughlan's piece was about how National has lost support from women, particularly young women. The only interesting bit was this. How out of touch must you be to think either Willis or Bishop would be appealing to young women #nzpol

There’s a leadership element to this too. Though favourability polling broken down by gender does not exist, one strategist told me Christopher Luxon’s underwater favourability is weighed down by his exceptional unpopularity among women. If the issue of National leadership ever came up again, National may want to consider a leader who can keep its base together and win back the young women who voted for the party in 2023. Nicola Willis, perhaps? Or does Chris Bishop have the John Key-like ability to appeal across the gender spectrum?

The OECD states “policies to reduce income inequalities should not only be pursued to improve social outcomes but also to sustain long-term growth”. If you wanted to exit the “Zimbabwe currency” Google spiral, you could dare to look at the economies of Spain, Norway and Switzerland. They’re all countries that have wealth taxes, and healthy economies, which Aylying fails to mention. It turns out there are plenty of real-world examples of how a fair tax system that funds productive investments in clean and affordable energy, a healthy environment, and resilient infrastructure is also good for economic development in the long term.

Chlöe on inflation (in response to FSU's Jonathan Ayling) #nzpol

Whether government spending is inflationary or not depends on what kind of spending is happening. Basically, whether that spending is competing to buy stuff that already exists, or investing in growing our ability to produce the stuff we need.

Productive investment — like renewable energy infrastructure, research and development, or increasing climate resilience — means that our economy develops to meet current and future demands of New Zealanders. This is inherently anti-inflationary, and increases economic prosperity for all of us. These investments enable us to expand the productive capacity of our economy and increase its resilience. We do this by properly funding the essential public services that support a healthy population. In a nutshell, we increase potential supply.

Of course, I’ll be the first to point out that it’s not just about growing the pie. A fixation on mere growth to the neglect of how exactly that growth is achieved, who benefits and who pays the price, has degraded our environment and given us record inequality, child poverty and homelessness. The rules that dictate whether the benefits of a growing pie are shared or hoarded by a few matter, including for that tired, metaphorical pie’s future growth potential.

We leave this branch long when cutting back the Cherry tree as it is a favourite launching pad for Tūī accessing the feeder. One day it will probably break from the combined weight
