cis women aren’t obligated to erase our own experiences or boundaries to show that respect.

We can acknowledge the discrimination trans women face while also recognising that cis women have sex-specific experiences and needs, including around menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth and other spaces.

Some don't like the Walkman. This may be true of others but I actually got express permission from the trans community to keep NYT games and recipes. I also have a news subscription, which is arguably worse, so I had to specifically send in a written request. Took 30 days but I got approved.

What happens when the Islamic ban on interest meets modern capitalism’s reliance on debt finance? The answer is the $5 trillion Islamic finance market, built on various clever ways of effectively charging interest while remaining within the letter of Sharia law. To a secular observer, the structure of a sukuk, an Islamic bond, can be a delightful and, yes, beautiful way of solving this otherwise intractable problem.

Not everyone sees it like that. Mona Siddiqi, a professor of religion and society at Kings College London, disparages sukuk as “religious gymnastics” that Muslims use to extract interest from their coreligionists while making it seem as though they’re being more godly than secular lenders. On a moral level, finding loopholes can be a bad thing to do, even when the structures used to create those loopholes are very clever and aesthetically impressive. That combination, of being morally ugly and also artistically compelling, is familiar to most art lovers — just think of a Francis Bacon painting.

In 2023, biologists discovered magpie nests made from anti-bird spikes. A nest found in Antwerp, Belgium, now in the collection of Naturalis Biodiversity Center, contains 1500 of these sharp metal spikes, made to deter birds. As they are placed in the dome of the nest to prevent predation of their chicks, they seem to be used in the same way they were intended to be used, to deter other birds.
