Crop of a comment in Microsoft Word. It reads: I don’t expect you to know this but I’m a single bookmark’s thickness from enshrining “No italics, bolds, or underlines for emphasis.” In the NESS house style.

I feel it shows a lack of faith in the reader, the author, or both and also robs the author of the benefit of letting the reader hear it in their head with what – for them – is the perfect line reading. It’s kind of kissing cousins to the thing in film where it’s better to leave the monster mostly in darkness, engaging the viewer’s imagination so it does the heavy lifting for you in a way you never could.

Aside from often being a bit of a filler word in a variety of contexts, "This but that" sentence structure can become overused (drawing attention to itself), has less pleasing flow ("this BUT that" having a kind of speedbump effect on the reader), and is frequently the weaker way of phrasing something.

To that last one, think of how it is often better to use a stronger verb than an adverb ("Conan thundered across the field" vs "Conan ran quickly across the field"). In a similar way you have "Conan swung his sword, but the Stygian blocked it with his shield." being outshone by "Conan's sword cut a trench across the bronze of the Stygian's shield.").
