Yay! After some drama we also managed to get the 2nd deep mooring to the surface at 86.5N. The top floats popped up right next to the ship. Feels good to have secured a new 2 year record of the ocean and ice at this remote location in the Amundsen Basin. #Arctic #EBT26 #FFKronprinsHaakon #npolar
This week, many of us are attending the #SCAR2026 conference on Antarctic research taking place in Oslo. We presented some of our latest research on the Southern Ocean, including updated data on ocean CO2 uptake and acidification as well as sea ice and icebergs. @scar-antarctic.bsky.social
Our team onboard #FFKronprinsHaakon has continued their work in the last week in the Makarov Basin, north of Baffin Island. Heavy and dense old ice has made progress slow. Operating equipment over the side of the ship is challenging. One has to be careful not to be caught by drifting ice floes.
After departing the North Pole, our team has been busy working on oceanographic and sea ice work onboard #FFKronprinsHaakon, while moving through heavier summer sea ice north of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. We are moving slowly towards #Svalbard to cross the Amundsen and Nansen basins. #EBT26
Our team on the #EBT26 expedition reached the North Pole with #FFKronprinsHaakon and are now making their way towards #Greenland through heavier ice. En route we have deployed many buoys and ice drifters that relay their data in near real-time, some in support of weather forecasting. #PH2050
We have reached 86.5N with very little ice in sight on the Eurasian Basin Transect expedition on RV Kronprins Haakon. Large openings (leads) in the ice has allowed us to sail this far north at high speed. We are soon at the first station on the Gakkel Ridge. #EBT2026 #PH2050 #FFKronprinsHaakon
A new article @commsearth.nature.com based on long-term observations from NPIs monitoring, shows a sharp decline in nitrogen concentration in Fram Strait around 2009, which could be traced back to sea ice decrease in the Arctic Ocean. www.nature.com/articles/s43247-026-03569-x 📸 L. Hislop (NPI)
This week are attending an interesting IICWG-DA sea-ice workshop in Copenhagen, with the aim to discuss issues of sea-ice observations, modelling, and data assimilation and how deficiencies of current systems can be diagnosed and addressed more efficiently. See: iicwgda2026copenhagen.wordpress.com
As part of the UN World Ocean Day #WOD2026 and the local ocean week (havuka) we arranged an ocean themed quiz at a local theatre earlier this week. unworldoceansday.org
To study sea-ice-air and sea-ice-water fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2) and biogeochemical processes in sea ice, we process sea-ice cores and do analyses of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA). Read more: instagram.com/p/DZM4HS1iIfV Photos: A. Fransson, NPI
This week it is 100 years since a crew of 16, including Roald Amundsen (expedition leader), Umberto Nobile (pilot), and Lincoln Ellsworth (navigator), crossed the North Pole with the airship “Norge”, starting in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, Norway. Read more: instagram.com/p/DYWz5KjiF-r
This year’s field campaign for monitoring sea ice in Kongsfjorden, #Svalbard, was completed – it took place with only little sea ice in the innermost parts of the fjord. 2026 falls into the category of those years with very little sea ice in the fjord. Read more: instagram.com/p/DXwH6-ZCPnC
This week, the annual workshop on Arctic-Subarctic Ocean Fluxes (ASOF) took place at the University of Bergen, where latest results on ocean exchanges and processes in the Arctic and Subarctic regions were presented and discussed. Read more: instagram.com/p/DXgzNsmiJ8L 📷 AM Wefing, L. de Steur, NPI
New research exhibition opened at Polaria! In collaboration with scientists at the Fram Centre, it offers a behind-the-scenes look at polar research, where you can meet scientists and explore life aboard RV Kronprins Haakon. Read more: instagram.com/p/DXV3bGJiJPk Photos: E. Kjeldsen, Polaria
A recent study @commsearth.nature.com proposes a novel mechanism, wherein #Arctic sea-ice ridging releases particles trapped in sea ice, which can subsequently serve as an energy source for pelagic plankton during the polar night. #MOSAiC #HAVOC www.nature.com/articles/s43...
Sir William Martin Conway was born 170 years ago and made many expeditions to #Svalbard in the late 1800s. He is known to those working on Svalbard, because of the glacier Conwaybreen, northeast of Kongsfjorden. Read more: instagram.com/p/DXGsPDQiKM7 @npiglaciology.bsky.social 📸 S. Gerland, NPI

New paper in #AGUpubs Reviews of Geophysics provides a framework of ocean‐sea ice‐atmosphere interactions. It focuses on processes affected by the shift from older ice to younger, thinner, and more dynamic #seaice types. @crices-h2020.bsky.social #Arctic #Antarctic See: doi.org/10.1029/2024...
The 2026 issue of #FramCentre Fram Forum magazine is hot off the press. We contributed stories on monitoring in #Arctic and #Antarctic waters, interdisciplinary and international collaborative ocean and sea ice research, using both remote sensing and field observations. Read more at: framforum.com
How thick is the sea ice we are breaking with RV Kronprins Haakon? To get a good and continuous measurement of the sea ice thickness, we have now deployed an electromagnetic transmitter-receiver antenna from the ship’s bow. Read more: instagram.com/p/DWGznZwiB-J 📸 K. Kovacs, P. Itkin (NPI)
A study @commsearth.nature.com report on trawling and fisheries echosounder surveys in the central #Arctic Ocean. Very little pelagic fish observed and none caught between 82N and the #NorthPole. In contrast to catches in the warmer Atlantic waters near #Svalbard. See: www.nature.com/articles/s43...
It has been an exciting and intense week at the @agu.org #OSM26 in Glasgow this week with many presentations from our team on both #Arctic and #Antarctic marine science, ranging from the deep ocean and ocean-ice interactions to sea ice and even birds. 📸M. Muilwijk, B. Merkel. NPI.
Several interesting presentations and posters today at the @agu.org #OSM26 conference with contributions from our team. Please tune in for some #Arctic and #Antarctic #science...
