Happy World Ocean Day! 🌊 This is a Spilhaus projection, a map of what the ocean looks like to an octopus or a fish. When our maps prioritize land, it's easy to forget that the seas of our world are one interconnected ocean. 🌍 🐡🐙 #worldoceanday

3) Action is more fun to draw. 🙃 Thanks for reading! 9 cards down, almost halfway done with the major arcana!
2 cont) The peaceful quality of other Strength illustrations reflects the folly of humankind's perceived exceptionalism, belief that humans are somehow divinely ordained to a dominion over brutality of nature. This notion is antithetical to the philosophy of Octopolis.
2) Strength is not a static quality, and the ocean ecosystem is the most obvious demonstration of that fact. Everyone eats everyone else, and its all a matter of relative size. Life in an ecosystem is a conflict that's in constant flux, and to presume anything else is hubris.
1) Octopolis is a matriarchal society, and the female is not perceived to be the weaker sex in any way. I suppose I could have drawn a male, but that's a pretty subtle distinction to humans, and I don't want to fall into a trap of just reflecting the same gender dichotomies of our present culture.
Past illustrations of Strength show a woman opening the mouth of a peaceful lion that tamely submits to the will of the feminine. This subverts expectations, demonstrating that Strength is about more than physical dominance. I chose another path for the Octopolis deck for a couple reasons.
Strength is pretty straightforward symbolically. The octopus demonstrates power over the moray eel, a predator of the octopus, by forcing its jaws open — literally and symbolically negating its power. However, my interpretation is significantly more violent than traditional depictions...
