But Karl never hated being Black the way he hated being a woman. Blackness brought suffering the same way womanhood did. But it brought him so much joy in a way womanhood never did. He never dreamed about waking up white, unless you count the nightmares. But he fantasized about being a man. It was the primary way he was able to reach climax during sex. Internalized misogyny, he figured, that refusal to connect to his ‘divine feminine’, to love and treasure and unlock the true power of his “yoni” for pleasure and self-actualization. Turns out Karl had no real beef with his pussy beyond it being called a woman’s pussy. Failing womanhood still felt bad, because he wore the banner of Black womanhood, a fragile and conditional state already dismissed and mocked and undermined and invalidated at every possible avenue by the society around him.

Giving up on his woman-life, or more specifically, retiring from being a Black Woman, felt like he was betraying somebody and proving all the eugenicists right. Confirming that there were no real Black women, only Black females worthy of violation; unworthy of protection, softness, or anesthesia.

So he kept his Black woman alive far longer than he had any business to. When he finally relented and chose his happiness, it still felt like he was killing her. He didn’t update his name on the evidence of his life that had already happened. He couldn’t be the reason another Black woman disappeared from this world, her name left unsaid.

I went to dinner my first night there and immediately thought "Colonel Mustard in the dining room with a candlestick". I went in the winter, so the mansion was only open for dinner (too expensive to heat the whole building). But it was great. Go in the spring/summer to get a room in the mansion.

#7: No Gods, No Monsters by Cadwell Turnbull This book is GOOD, with one caveat: I recommend reading the prose over listening to the audiobook. The performer's great, but the book's structure is AMBITIOUS, and it was easy to get lost in the many, many jumps between characters/perspective/time.
