He saw it the first time he saw them after their parents and brother died. He saw it again when they told him to go to New York
— without them. He's seen it so many other times when something would come up that they just... couldn't tackle in that moment.
He could always give them that space they needed until they could talk about it again.
And as much as he aches to know what's going on... he can take what he's given. He can brave it for them.
He sees that look again in them now, and decides that as long as they're here, next to him, then everything else is just details. He wraps them up in a hug again, and they bury their head into his neck. For a moment it's just them, and it's okay.

for WIP Wednesday: a snippet from chapter 1 of “you saw the truth in me” from my Nostalgia Series, a tealoranges childhood friends to strangers to to lovers and garlicsoup fic 🧡

They grab the nearest hoodie, still warm from the night before, and drag themself to the door.
Archie stands there, hands in the pockets of her denim jacket, eyes glinting with amusement.
"Nice to see you're alive, Jimbo."
Jim huffs out a laugh. They adore her, but they had been looking forward to several hours of not existing.
"Come in," they mumble, stepping aside.
She grins like she's just been invited into mischief.
"You look like shit, baby."
"Thanks, nice to see you too" Jim mutters as Archie steals a short kiss.

The apartment feels warmer now, lived-in: her jacket hanging on a chair from the last time she stayed over, her favorite tea on the counter. Jim busies themself with the coffee machine because it's something to do that doesn't involve looking her in the eyes.
"Your phone's off," Archie says, leaning against the wall.
"I know," Jim answers. "Lo siento."
"Lucius made me check you were still breathing."
"I'm breathing."
They pour her tea without asking. She smirks-she knows what that gesture means.
"Should I ask?" she says.
"Fuck, please don't," Jim sighs. "Actually... maybe you should. I don't know."
"Oluwande says hi," she says casually, watching them carefully.
