The 2026 Friends of Hoar Oak Cottage Exhibition concentrates on the charity's key themes of The People, The Place, and The Life.
Stewardship of Hoar Oak Cottage involves not only the building but also the men, women and children whoonce lived and worked there.
The exhibition captures images and info on all three themes and shows them in a new display kindly funded by the British Association for Local History.

A #OnePlaceStudy of Sugar Lane Cemetery, Wakefield has recently been registered with us by Carol Sklinar, who has conducted extensive research into names on Commonwealth War Graves and other headstones at the cemetery, and the stories behind them. #OnePlaceWednesday

Four posts have been added to the #OnePlaceStudy website of the Badsey Society since we last checked, with subjects including Hocktide in Badsey, wildlife in a Wickhamford garden, and a present-day Badsey resident who has found that an ancestor owned property in the village. #OnePlaceWednesday

Joanna Paterson has registered her #OnePlaceStudy of Chapel Street, East Stonehouse. The street—once densely populated and full of shops & businesses—became part of Durnford Street and was later mostly destroyed during the Blitz, making the OPS both an attraction and a challenge! #OnePlaceWednesday

The next meeting of the Bourne End, Buckinghamshire #OnePlaceStudy Society, on Thursday July 16, is another ‘fireside chat.’ The local residents contributing to this informal conversation are Pat McGraw and Dave Kimber, who will share their memories of Bourne End. #OnePlaceWednesday

Recently registered with us by our member Stella Scott is Castle Yard, #Highgate, N6 #OnePlaceStudy. Stella aims to research and produce a written report on the history of this place, where some of her ancestors lived. Her plans are set out on the profile page for this OPS. #OnePlaceWednesday

News from a #OnePlaceStudy which is not registered with us: A History of Pirbright Properties has now completed histories of 65% of the properties in #Pirbright, with details of their owners, occupants and activities over the years. #OnePlaceWednesday

I had difficulty finding a death certificate; the GRO index recorded the name of the deceased as ‘Reverend’! I searched FreeBMD for deaths of people with the 1st name Reverend, & found a few including Reverend Mother ‘surnamed’ Rose! There was 1 Reverend birth & 2 marriages. #OnePlaceWednesday

It’s #OnePlaceWednesday *and* #NationalSeasideDay! Sarah Cook’s recently registered #OnePlaceStudy of Humberston Fitties on the coast of Lincolnshire. A plotland area created in the inter-war period, this place now consists of about 330 holiday chalets. Check out the OPS Facebook Group!

This online talk will look at both ends of this scale through surviving records held at the archives. Steve Pickthall’s #OnePlaceStudy of Shrivenham Railway Station has recently been registered with us! Located in a part of #Berkshire that is now in #Oxfordshire, the station opened in 1840 and closed in 1964/5. Check out Steve’s OPS website and our OPS profile page. #OnePlaceWednesday

Frosterley in County Durham is where Adrian Dennison’s grandparents lived. Adrian’s #OnePlaceStudy of this place will focus mainly on the lime industry, initially from from 1850 to 1911: its quarries and kilns were the main source of employment in the area. #OnePlaceWednesday
