It's already so dry

Niwa soil moisture deficit at 9am on 10/06/2026. Three images of new Zealand, the left on is the historic average, the centre is last year, the right is current. Most of the country across all three maps is blue showing no moisture deficit, but the eastern south island from northern Canterbury to dunedin is a mix of yellows and oranges at the moment with chch areas of dark orange indicating a moisture deficit of over 110mm of rain

'Nother day, 'nother update. Had my first big mistakes following the pattern instructions, had to rip out three seams 😭. But progress is slowly being made! The lining is nearly done, just gone one and a half seams left to do on that, and then it's time for the great conjunction.

Look, at the end of the day, what New Zealanders care about is results, and the reality is I’ve gone ahead and delivered on eating those plums that were sitting in the icebox.

Now, I know you were probably looking to leverage those for your breakfast strategy, but we’ve had to make a tough call here. I make no apologies for that—the plums were high-quality, they were sweet, and they were incredibly cold.

And this is what it looks like so far when worn, the shoulders haven't been done yet so I have to hold it up, but it fits!!! Honestly im so happy at how this looks so far.

The seams look pretty good if I do say so myself, not perfect but decent for a first garment 😅 But I've sown together 10 pieces into one large piece of fabric now!

Sowing update, it's coming along! I've never used a sowing machine before so I'm at a friend's who is teaching me. Babys first seam in the first picture, not too bad! Then it's just assembling pieces and going to town. Copious amounts of ironing and pressing seams

Aaaand hem interfacing done. Now (I think) I'm up to sowing. But first some planning for the rest of the costume, which will be tomorrow because I am beat. This is quite labour intensive I have to say, fun though!

This is such a budget setup lmao. Major bits of interfacing ironed on, still got some hem allowance areas to figure out though.

Actually correction, ironing on the interfacing is first. I saw a recommendation online to mark all the wrong sides of the fabric with chalk lines so I went and did that as well
