EU ETS proposal: a partial solution to a major climate challenge
Despite recognising that aviation could account for 90% of EU transport emissions by 2050, the European Commission has proposed only a partial solution.
The proposal:
✅ Expands the EU ETS to more international flights – a welcome step forward.
❌ Still excludes some of the world’s largest aviation markets, such as the US and China, while covering lower-traffic routes like North Africa.

By prioritising geopolitical considerations over climate impact and economic fairness, the Commission is falling short of the ambition needed.
📢 The Parliament and Council must strengthen the proposal and extend the ETS to all departing flights.
