It was the poetry of Dr. Sonia Sanchez that introduced me to the world of Haikai—Japanese and English. I didn't come in through the four masters (Basho, Buson, Issa, and Shiki). I came in through Dr. Sanchez. Her language, imagery, turns of phrases etc.... so natural and resonant.
The ’90s Law & Order theme brings up a semi-sad aching. It turns out the Portuguese word "Saudade" describes it perfectly: a deep longing for a moment in my childhood—pre-internet, Blockbuster, and rotary phones—that is now gone forever.

KURAKI Sakai, one of the renovaters of #senryu during Meiji. One of his desires was to provide separation between #senryu and #kyoka. He says "Senryu is a history of customs, a poetry of human affairs. It contains a certain humor/satire (according to Kuraki). He assert that #senryu should be poetry.
Drawing from the history of Renga linked poetry, there are certain verses that had certain functions (like the hokku, wakiku, ageku etc) but the verses without function, are called HIRAKU 'flat, ordinary' verses. These are verses where nature/humanity, reality/imagination mingle freely.
