The point about how separation of powers just empirically does not and has never worked feels like the most under discussed part here, this was well understood as early as the 1880s.

I recently learned that a lot of southern states use their primary ballots to push poll supporters and frankly if they're allowed to do that there should be a whole section of the general election ballot reserved for the census and BLS.

The interesting comparisons are MSA and CSA, which actually diverge quite a lot, LA is the one almost peer CSA to NYC before a huge falloff but in MSA terms NYC is almost twice as big. I think CSA is probably a fairer comparison especially because the NYC CSA is hemmed in on both sides but LA is not
