The Andean porcupine is a medium-sized porcupine with a head-and-body length of between 332 and 420 mm (13.1 and 16.5 in) and a tail length of between 290 and 413 mm (11.4 and 16.3 in). A fully grown adult weighs in the region of 2 kg (4 lb). The nose is pink and large, and the eyes are small. The body is spiny all over, the evenly spaced spines being dark with yellowish tips in the animal's mid section. The tail tapers from a broad base and is prehensile.

The jumping mouse is grayish-brown on the back, yellowish-brown on the sides, and white underneath (Van Pelt 1993, p 1). The species is about 7. 4 to 10 inches (187 to 255 mm) in total length, with elongated feet (1.2 inches (30.6 mm)) and an extremely long, bicolored tail (5.1 inches (130.6 mm)) (Van Pelt 1993, p. 1; Hafner et al. 1981, p. 509)

It is a small-sized species within the genus. Long dorsal hairs and vibrissa-like spines are absent. Most spines are tricolored, with a yellowish or orange base, a black or brown middle band, and reddish to brownish tips; the defensive spines on the rump (microscopically) feature sharp, barb-like tips (Voss, 2015). This species is characterized primarily by a non-prehensile tail (40% of the combined head-and-body length) and a distinctive reddish coloration (Voss, 2015). The chin, throat, and ventral body are pale brown; the feet are black. It has a white spot or stripe on the nose and small white spines on the crown that give it a slight crest-like appearance; the sides of the cheeks are marked with whitish coloration (Gray, 1865).

California ground squirrels have mottled fur, with gray, light and dark brown, and white present in their pelage. They typically have a darker mantle. The shoulders, neck and sides of this species are a lighter gray. The bushy tail is a combination of the colors that appear on the back. The underside is a lighter combination of light brown, gray and white. California ground squirrels have a white ring around each eye.

It is a medium sized (head-body length 16 to 22) rodent (animal with a pair of incisor teeth in continuous growth), with a strong body and a large tail (10 to 15 cm). Its coat is dense and short, of dark brown colour, with yellowish tones, a bit lighter on the belly (ash grey). The hair covers the tail, legs and ears. The tail is bi-coloured, being slightly fairer on the lower part.
