Early life and education:

Varsavsky was born in Buenos Aires to a Jewish family. His father is Carlos Varsavsky, a Harvard-educated astrophysicist; his mother is Silvia Waisman-Diamond. At age 17, Varsavsky and his family fled Argentina as refugees during the military dictatorship, assisted by B'nai B'rith. The family's departure was precipitated by the forced disappearance of his cousin, David Horacio Varsavsky, one of the desaparecidos of the Dirty War.

The controversies of the 2006 United States Senate election in Virginia involved both Republican incumbent senator George Allen and Democratic opponent Jim Webb. However, a majority of these controversies negatively impacted Allen and are believed to have contributed to his defeat in the November election.

Allen's macaca controversy:

On August 11, 2006, George Allen twice called S.R. Sidarth, a 20-year-old Webb campaign volunteer, macaca. Sidarth is of Indian ancestry, but was born and raised in Fairfax County, Virginia. As a "tracker" for the opposing Webb campaign, Sidarth was filming an Allen campaign stop in Breaks, Virginia, near the Kentucky border.

This is akin to the later thinking of Robert Michels, so frustrated with socialist party bureaucracy demobilizing the grassroots in what he called the “Iron Law of Oligarchy”, that he moved from socialism to fascism.

In Italy, Michels studied the elite theory writings of Vilfredo Pareto. After 1911, he abandoned gradually his socialist ideas. In 1924, he joined the National Fascist Party led by Benito Mussolini. There are different interpretations among scholars for this change. One interpretation is that Michels as a disillusioned idealist considered fascism as an alternative to the problems of democracy and bureaucracy. Another interpretation is that Michels incorporated elite theory into his own political thought and began to consider the charismatic authority (as proclaimed by Max Weber) as the most logical hope to avoid bureaucratic domination.
