Ed Kienholz’s “The Portable War Memorial.” It was shown in a book I had as a child—I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in person. But the soldiers’ empty helmets, hovering, faceless, have stuck with me for almost 50 years.

At first glance I read this as, like, Barbie’s Ken…and it still made perfect sense because I had Mod Hair Ken in the early 70s, and he came with one-dimensional stick-on facial hair, mutton chops, etc.
I had to say goodbye to this beautiful, brave girl yesterday, after just shy of 16 years. Sweet baby Iris, I’m so glad to have shared your little life, and honored to have sent you off to your next adventure with a mouthful of cream cheese, your favorite, for the road. Love you forever.
My Grammy was a carhop at the Igloo in the early 1940s—she was 18 when she started. They didn’t wear roller skates there, but she did have a mini skirt uniform and majorette boots! This photo is one of my most prized possessions.

It’s just an iced latte, slowly settling…but so perfect on a shitty day, I immortalized it. The bar/coffeehouse (Seattle; The Dane) never recovered after the pandemic, and I cried when they closed.
My two cats bickered and staged slap-fights almost daily for 14 years…but I could always tell when the weather turned in the fall, because they’d suddenly deign to snuggle, while still looking mad about it.
