Last July, in a small town in coastal Maine, a couple of progressive, self-styled recruiters of economic populists showed up at the blue-shingled house of Graham Platner, a little-known oyster farmer and Marine veteran who lived largely off government benefits.
They knew his name from local labor organizers and activists, and they had watched a video on the internet of him talking about oysters. Struck by his left-leaning ideology, his working-class affect and his gravelly voice, they became convinced that he could win a Senate seat in Maine - and quickly persuaded Mr. Platner of the same.
The initial headhunters, Dan Moraff and Leanne Fan, and then a third out-of-state operative they called up to Maine - Morris Katz
— told Mr. Platner he was "the one," a "hero of the movement," "a historical figure" who could be "leading a revolution," according to half a dozen people with knowledge of their conversations.
But a clutch of people who cared about Mr. Platner were telling him something else. They worried about his mental health, amid his ongoing efforts to heal from post-traumatic stress disorder after tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. They feared this trio of out-of-state operatives was a dangerous combination of inexperienced and overconfident. The worst-case scenario, they thought, wasn't running for Senate and losing — it was destroying the life he worked hard to build.

The frequency of such violence explains the scale of the criminal "necro-economy" that has taken shape over the course of the war. Volunteers receive large sums of money for enlisting. Commanders are well aware of this. They take advantage by extorting and demanding bribes, threatening "cancellation" if the money is not paid.
A woman recounted the story of her visually impaired brother, who refused to hand over a large portion of his bonus as demanded by his superiors: "He called me to tell me. Being exempted from an assault cost him 600,000 rubles [€6,700]. He did not pay. The commander sent him into the attack. Since then, there has been no news." This soldier was among those who, having refused to pay, were sent as "meat," in other words, placed on the front line. Another form of "cancellation."
In their letters, soldiers and their families also condemn the practice of commanders demanding that, before an assault, the men hand over their bank cards and pin codes. If a soldier disappears, these unscrupulous officers pocket bonuses. Before an attack, commanders often offer the soldier the chance to pay his "ransom" - the word used at the front for this bribe. If he refuses, he could be beaten and sent to "the hole," a punitive cell dug into the earth.
"At their request to be allowed a little rest, my husband and his comrades were refused and were violently beaten by their own commander," wrote one wife. "Their weapons and bulletproof vests were taken from them, their mouths, eyes, hands and feet were taped, and then they were thrown into the hole. They stayed there for three days without water or food."

On the trail, Avila Chevalier said her old tweets don't represent her current views and that she's focused on lowering the cost of living in her district, shifting the focus to "babies, not bombs."
Her past comments, though, have made some in the Democratic Party uneasy, despite her apologies and assertions she's changed (she also affirmed during the campaign that she still believes all deportations are wrong, including of undocumented immigrants convicted of serious crimes like murder and rape). I haven’t followed the local politics closely, can’t opine on candidates, but DSA organization probably made a difference in outcomes. Most primaries don’t get voters excited but for DSA, which wants power so badly, it’s all excitement, all the time.
