I wrote a book, I’m sorry. Just my opinion, take it with a grain of salt

On the surface I dislike remakes with the same name as the original just from a naming/efficiency perspective. It smacks of trying to supplant the original while banking on nostalgia for it. (See also: Ratchet and Clank, et al.)

On a personal note, any remake has to work extremely hard to justify its own existence to me. Paving over clunky gameplay or making things more widely accessible to people who couldn’t otherwise play it is very nice, but there are ways to do that without making the game from the ground up and erasing the artistry that went into the original. The 3DS version is a great example of this, despite being on dated hardware. I had hoped that when it came time for the next update, Nintendo would have been willing to polish that version a bit further.
The argument exists that “the original isn’t going anywhere” but I find this a troubling attitude in this current industry. Companies seem so allergic to preserving their own history and Nintendo is especially hard on emulation which is increasingly becoming the only viable way to preserve this media.

All this to say, this new remake seems to want to make OoT more “realistic” whatever that word could actually mean and regardless of how it actually benefits the gameplay or experience. The constant push for realism as the highest good is the death of art, especially in video games. It makes the game feel more like it’s trying to shirk the perceived stigma of being a capital VG Video Game so it can be more like a movie; and with the Zelda movie looming over the horizon this decision seems less motivated by the Nintendo whose guiding philosophy was gameplay innovation first and more like the Nintendo of the dollar-signs-for-eyes variety.

Tl;dr Nintendo and I haven’t been friends for a while and this decision doesn’t instill confidence
