Despite visiting Paris around six or seven times before, there is still something special about seeing the Tour Eiffel. Sunset cruise on the Seine was a delightful way to reintroduce ourselves, after about 19 years since our last visit - yes, RWC 2007 🙄
Over the past decade we’ve visited vineyards in different countries and the message is clear - the climate has changed and continues to change. It’s hotter. In Bordeaux we met a wine maker who forecasts this year he will harvest in late August! First time on record doing so early, due to climate.
Edinburgh was full of tourists, northern Spain was home tourists or quiet (driving was easy!), Bordeaux had lots of Americans as well as local visitors, Loire was French visitors too, but Paris? Hoo boy she’s teeming! Could not believe the queue to get into Norte Dame!! (Listen to my comments) ⬇️
Bordeaux is a beautiful river city. It’s busy, with vehicles 🚗, trams, cyclists 🚴 and pedestrians all living in harmony! Lots of EVs, including the smallest cars you ever did see! The broad boulevards lend themselves to sharing the road, and the flat city works for bikes. Underground car parks too
When you’re walkable distance from the beach, you just grab your surfboard and walk! San Sebastián, Spain
Also like the change in speed limit when it rains - a reduction of 20kph from the regular limit. I think this should seriously be given thought in NZ as Kiwis don’t know how to drive safely in the rain!
The walkable, cycle friendly cities of Europe have one thing in common that gets ignored in NZ narrative. City centre car parking, inc for residents. All the reduction of cars in cities does not ignore their use, cities have big underground car parks in infrastructure that’s older than modern NZ!
Been a while since I drove on Spanish roads. This time I notice motorways speed limit is 120 Kph, though many drive 130-140kph, but indicate and pull over after overtaking, unlike Kiwi drivers! Also not so cheap as previous visits, butter around same $ as NZ! But this in supermarket ❣️⬇️
Litre bottles of Olive oil in Spain - €5.99 is about $11.82 NZD. And this is just a wee city supermarket!
I think this is a great idea for historical sites. At the Lord Melville monument in Edinburgh the Council will change the plaque with on providing context, including the effects the person had in history and why a statue was erected in the first place.
Ah Te Whanganui a Tara Wellington, you’re ending the week strong and beautifully so we might forgive you for how the week started! Also, there’s snow on the Tararuas!
