Fortunately a colleague had eclipse glasses and I could borrow. Nice slice taken out of the sun.

Feeling bummed that I forgot to bring my eclipse glasses to work today as a partial eclipse (10%) will be seen around 2 pm. Then I remembered that nothing is quite like the total eclipse that I experienced in 2024 - not even 95% is as good as total. So, it is OK to miss one with 10% coverage.

The Soap Bubble nebula (PN G75.5+1.7) is a planetary nebula near the Crescent nebula (NGC6888) in the constellation Cygnus. The soap bubble is in the bottom left quadrant of the image. This bubble of ionized gas was ejected from a red giant - something that the Sun will eventually do. 🔭🧪

So much smoke from the Canadian wild fires. It has turned Sun orange. We can smell it and taste it. 🧪🔭

The camera was installed on my mailbox post and it stayed out there for the whole duration. I am glad that the duct tape survived through the snow, ice and cold of winter.

Six months-long exposure taken using a pinhole camera containing photographic paper. It tracked the Sun’s movement in the sky from winter to summer solstice. Each curve shows one day and stretches of cloudy days can be seen as dark patches. #solarcan 🔭🧪

To be fair, managing algae is a tougher problem than one can imagine. Anyone with a fish tank - especially a salt water one - can attest to that. I am sure that National Park Service people are getting overtime pay to work on this on a Saturday.

A large cloud of gas and dust where a lot of stars being born. Radiation from the hot young stars make the cloud glow. It is about 2600 ly away in the constellation Cygnus. This evening just after Sunset, three planets - Venus, Jupiter and Mercury - were visible with the Moon. Mercury can be seen just above the tree line in the second photo. 🔭🧪

Sombrero Galaxy is a spiral galaxy in Virgo at 34 million light years. Passing high clouds added a glow to this image. Total exposure is just over 1 hour. Will have to shoot it again on a clear night. 🔭🧪

On the night of June 9th, Jupiter and Venus are closest to each other - less than 2 degrees. They will start to drift apart but I won’t see that for next several days as we expect clouds and rain.

Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex consists of richly colored nebulae of gas and dust in the constellations Ophiucus and Scorpius. This star-forming region is located at about 450 light years. The globular star cluster M4 is a nice addition to this dramatic view. 109x 30sec; Nikon Z6 - 135mm 🔭🧪

M106 is a bright spiral galaxy about 23 million LY away in the constellation Canes Venatici. Jupiter (left) and Venus (right) are inching closer to each other every night. They will be closest on the evening of June 9th. It is quite striking when 2 bright objects get so close in the night sky. 🔭🧪

One of the few orchids that grow in New England, pink ladies slippers, are blooming right now. These can only be seen in the wild. They can’t be domesticated as they need a certain kind of fungus in the soil to grow. The rain brought out a lot of these newts as well.
