Fascinated to discover that, six months before publication of The Spy who Came in from the Cold, David Mercer's (now missing) TV play The Birth of a Private Man also features a protagonist who ends up getting shot at the Berlin Wall. Playing this role was Tony Garnett, who recalls it in his memoir:
