ok so. my total commute each day is almost two hours, during which i usually listen to audiobooks, and also a big chunk of this number is comics and children's books (though not picture books, i track those separately).
when your dad has possibly been replaced by a monster it's important to keep your evidence organized.
I've been checking the Newbury Comics near my Monday job for the past three weeks hoping they would get some Jax merchandise in stock, and at last, I am rewarded. Nonbinary flag in the back isn't meant to imply anything (except about me), that's just the best-lit spot in my room.
happy nonbinary day, everyone! i'm an author/artist and i love to write genderqueer characters. i have a short story in the free WEREWOLVES VS. NATURE anthology: argylewerewolf.itch.io/wv08
apparently my idea of "moody bullshit" is just purple, lol, but here's a couple recentish samples!
Aaaand last, grownups. TSFC: confirmed lesbian Alice! the silent movie stuff is neat. BS: great worldbuilding, Serapio's fascinating, queuing up the sequel now. HALS: very interesting playscript! gotta read more about these two. LOSERS: had my doubts but i love how obsessed with each other they are.
YA and GNs! 📚👍 MW: i'm a sucker for skateboard stories, loved this a lot! DLIBYH: reminded me of reading my forever fav @hannahmosk.bsky.social. messy, fun dynamics. TOS: great intros to lots of trans artists!! some really lovely vignettes. BLM: ugh, my emotions. obsessed with them.
queerness? in my middle grade? it's more likely than you think! 📚👍 IAONV: really captures the grindset problem, especially for kids this age. 💚 when Vico Ortiz reads to me WOF: i just love the characters. and the worldbuilding. and- PB: very sweet, would be a great read-aloud OO: 🧡 too relatable 🧡
it's been One Month, time for a reading update! PBs first 📚👍 PWTMAH: great variety of poems perfectly paired with really sweet illustration! TAT: love the concept stringing the haikus together, beautifully done. SS: neat folktale adaption! BATU: Lita is a local fav at my library. always lovely 💜🦄
Sometimes a comic is just. Hyper relatable. (I literally only came out to my mother because I'd been accepted to Lambda, lol. That "I want to be published" panel hit maybe too hard.) Thank you @redgoldsparks.bsky.social and @luckyscomix.bsky.social, I know this will mean so much to so many kids!
i write lots of not-so-good parents, but actually all the MCs in HANDS ON MISERY have great dads. some of 'em are even alive! jasper is my favorite, despite his flaw of being biologically impelled to kill people. he would absolutely burn the world for flint, but luckily they're a good influence.
a little then-and-now fan art of one of my favorite villains of all time, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of a very formative #webcomic. truly this was the trans representation i craved in my youth: a murderous gay zombie.
the great thing about online epistolary is getting to come up with all the silly usernames, lol. also, speculating about who will survive is such a joy of being in fandom for an ongoing series. #queerwriterschat
aaaand finally, problematic horny jail. HOI: cool worldbuilding, neat fucked up dynamics. AHLNO: i love this so much, there's something wrong with me. just all-in immediately. TH&HWCS: *really* dark hero, but also funny. i'm here for the delicious angst. HT: mafia romance with a disabled heroine!
🎶one of these things is not like the others...🎶 HAIGTFD: great audiobook, love these kids, can't wait to talk about it at book club. PFK: married in vegas / toxic family shenanigans, pretty fun! MCHAS: this one's just silly, in a good way. THOHH: i got so scared i had to spoil the ending, lol.
more kidlit, not about death! 📚👍 AOAKF: a little dated, but very cute! i'm gonna read the rest. TMM: the love of creativity really shines in this. great poetry, ofc! PA: somehow never read the novels? so fun, adorable art! CMHANL: the diary format is really cool, great illustration, baby sapphics!
next up, MGs about death! a genre unto itself. 📚👍 ATBITS: love a book that makes me cry in the car. DM: ugh, my heart. trans kids and cryptids are everything. TUFODF: make me feel emotions about mushrooms, why not. FL: classic girl-and-her-dog/grieving-family-finds-healing wholesomeness.
Time for a nice long reading update! PBs first 📚👍 TMOAM: very sweet, accessible text with informative backmatter. AC: relating a little too hard, as my new cat constantly runs away from me. sigh. TB: in this house we stan Mr. dePaola! SATBB: so cute, so creative, love how the fable's retold.
last but not least, romances ❤️ LRPD: too adorable! perfect for Rachel Reid hangover. NCTM: dracula's actually sexy, maybe. (no.) DTBPF: library buddy loaned me this series, it is bonkers from start to finish. HTFIIS: new KJ Charles!! waiting for the house of cards to fall was deliciously painful
real life (/adjacent)! WNITF: cool fictionalization of a heartening story. unfortunately very timely. read banned books!! FMW: i don't read many memoirs but i'm glad i did this one. deeply humanizing. TLB: libraries are wild, man. fascinating, both the fire and the wider LAPL history.
comics corner! 📚👍 TSHD: teen library started me on this. upsetting and fascinating. i'm obsessed. INBETWEENS: this is gonna be such great inspiration to young artists! CH: awesome worldbuilding! love the community focus. MGD: scratches the magical girl itch perfectly, love Shade.
MG/YA time! 📚👍 HM: love this. funny, heartfelt, and relatable. WoF: once again, read like 4 in row, can't get the next until hoopla borrows renew in May, suffering. no spoilers but i LOVE [redacted], can't wait to see what they do about him OWSL: a beautiful gut punch. 2nd person POV's pretty neat!
time for a reading roundup! strap in, i've read a lot of great books. PBs first! 📚👍 ZFE: love the multicultural community, so cool! DEE: @liantomato.bsky.social is too funny, idk what to tell you RUTHIE: the goofiest looking dog, i love him DON'T TRUST FISH: hilarious. perfect. don't trust fish.
these last two i haven't quite finished yet, but i'm enjoying them both so much that i wanted to give them a shout. SAPLING CAGE has some of the coolest witches i've seen in a while, and FINE is pretty darn fascinating. thus we close another #transrightsreadathon, and i'm off to do my donating.
a much lighter pick for #transrightsreadathon, wonderfully fun and silly. it's giving KISS KISS FALL IN LOVE energy, about which i never complain. i read this to fit my romance book club theme, secret identities, but i wasn't expecting to be so charmed by the MC and his lovely, quirky friend group.
next for #transrightsreadathon is a magical dark academia full of twists and turns. really neat body-swapping concept, and of course i love the ragtag criminal found family.
another #transrightsreadathon that'd been on my list awhile! my first McLemore, actually, which is kinda wild. the descriptions in this are so artistic, loved the way the magical realism tied into the characters' emotional journeys. also, always excited when @vico-ortiz.bsky.social is narrating.
before #tdov is over, it's time for a #transrightsreadathon roundup! i've been meaning to read OLD WOUNDS forever, and it totally lived up to expectations. love the weird tension between the MCs and the complexity of their bond, love the horror movie tropes, love the mystery creature.
