Two Welsh writers discuss the erosion of memory and the art of the memoir with writer and translator Daniel Hahn in this luminous conversation about what is being lost and what we can hold on to.

Novelist Francesca Rhydderch recounts her struggle for a neurological diagnosis in It Might Not Be True: A Memoir of Life and Love. In danger of fighting a losing battle – with time, memory, herself – she learns there are ways to live in the present by making peace with the past.

Poet Samantha Wynne-Rhydderch’s fourth collection Milk Wood Memoir explores how the paths of her home town of New Quay – walked by Dylan Thomas and likely an inspiration for Under Milk Wood – are slowly collapsing into the sea due to coastal erosion.

'A subtle, beautifully composed and complex masterpiece of life-writing, Francesca Rhydderch’s account of her life has opened new perspectives on what a memoir can be and do. 'It Might Not Be True' is surely destined to become a classic of the genre.

It’s a luminous web of past and present, love and loss, in which the author confronts the trauma of living with disabling and potentially mortal illness. I read slowly, as I would do with a poem. You need to read for every word. There’s so much tenderness, grief and humour in the delicate weave of Rhydderch’s understated writing style. You’re there with her family in Cardiff, Caswell, New Quay, inhabiting a sort of travelling ‘now’, feeling that you’ve somehow or other personally been there yourself, known the people, heard their voices. How many memoirs make you feel that they’re important for your own life, so you’d better take in every word? I think that was part of why I read so slowly and thoughtfully.

How on earth does Rhydderch do this? Her narrative, with its complex skeining and questioning of memory and its refusal of easy answers, crisscrosses the years of the writer’s life, with a unique music that makes me feel: 'Yes, this is real and true, the narrator has captured truths, and I’m there too, how strange.'
