"Australia’s first study of bi+ people’s sexual health uncovers critical gaps

A study led by the Kirby Institute at UNSW Sydney included an analysis of data from over 2,100 bi+ Australians, & found the following:

Cis bi+ women had higher levels of engagement with health care, but also higher rates of illicit drug use, sexual violence perpetrated against them, & STI diagnoses.

Trans & non-binary/gender diverse bi+ participants tended to feel more included in & engaged with LGBTQ+ communities, but also reported higher rates of sexual violence perpetrated against them, & poor mental health.

Cis bi+ men were half as likely to have had sexual violence perpetrated against them compared with bi+ people of other genders in the study, but their reported experiences were still over 5 times higher than in the general male population.

Cis bi+ men were less likely to be connected to LGBTQ+ community & sexual health care in general.

28% of bi+ participants met the threshold for probable serious psychological distress, more than double the rate in the general Australian population (17%). Rates were even higher among trans & non‑binary bi+ people.

"Syphilis cases are spiking in several CA counties

As of 2024, congenital syphilis has increased for 12 straight years.

It has reached its highest point since 1994.

To decrease the rates of infection, it is recommended that:
Health care providers screen everyone between the ages of 15 & 44 in areas with a high rate of the disease.
Testing should be repeated during pregnancy in counties with the highest rates.

In California:
Fresno County recorded the highest syphilis rate among the state’s most populated counties, with 30.4 cases per 100,000 women ages 15 - 44.
Sacramento county followed in 2nd with 24.6 cases cases.
Los Angeles reported a rate of 12.9.
Santa Clara had the lowest rate at 3.9.

Syphilis is caused by bacteria, & symptoms vary depending on what stage the infection is in.

Ulcers may develop & your body may clear them, but without antibiotics, your body won’t be able to cure the disease.

"Human papillomavirus (HPV) is spread by several kinds of sexual activity, & many strains genetically modify cells, which can lead to cancer.

In England, no women aged 20 - 24 died of cervical cancer between 2020 & 2024.

This is the 1st time that zero cervical-cancer death has been recorded for this age group.

There were some deaths among women aged 25 - 29, but far fewer than would be expected.

It’s estimated around 200 lives have already been saved.

A recent study published in The Lancet provides evidence that this decline can be attributed to uptake of the HPV vaccine.

It has been established that the HPV vaccine greatly reduces infections & cases of cervical cancer, & now we have the 1st evidence it prevents deaths too.

It should also protect against warts on the skin & genital & anal areas in both sexes.

Worldwide, the uptake of the HPV vaccine is low, the rate of cervical cancer is still rising, & people are still dying.

In January, cuts threatened more than 11,000 HIV patients in Florida when the Department of Health lowered the threshold for financial assistance for HIV medication, citing a $120 million shortfall in federal funding.

In March, the state passed a $30.9 million emergency measure that restored financial eligibility.

Lawmakers fully restored the funding in the 2026-27 budget.

While funding is secure for now, healthcare providers are keeping their eyes on lawmakers when they return next session.

Sexually transmitted diarrhea spreading rapidly among gay men in UK

A new study from the University of Cambridge has found that variants of Shigella, which can cause bloody or prolonged diarrhea, are causing more disease and growing more antibiotic-resistant.

Sexually transmitted forms of Shigella usually come from direct or indirect contact between the mouth and anus.

Between 2015 and 2020, sexually transmitted forms of Shigella rose 15% faster annually than variants transmitted through other means like travel or food.

- More than 70% of the sexually transmitted strains of Shigella resisted at least 1 relevant antibiotic.
- 1/3 of patients who contract sexually transmitted Shigella end up in the hospital, for an average of 4 - 5 days.
- Up to 2/3 of GBMSM (men who have sex with men) with Shigella are also found to have other STIs, including HIV.

Public health management of this issue is failing, as the advice for dealing with Shigella has been handwashing and food hygiene, which does not address how to prevent the sexual transmission of it.

Senior author of the study Professor Kate Baker stated “Sexually transmissible shigellosis needs to be treated as a distinct public health threat, requiring different surveillance, prevention, and treatment strategies.”

"Doctor issues health warning about 'silent STI' that can have no symptoms

Just because you may not experience symptoms from an STI, does not mean you cannot infect someone else.

Even if you don't feel adverse effects from an infection,
they can still result in long-term health issues.

Chlamydia is the most common treatable STI, but:
- Three quarters of women who have chlamydia don't realize they have an infection.
- Half of men who have chlamydia don't realize they have an infection.

Some can result in conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease that may cause fertility issues.

Herpes may be transmissible even when not having outbreaks. Daily suppressive therapy can greatly reduce that risk.

HPV & HIV, can be silent & symptomless for a long time, but:
- HPV can result in genital warts & cervical cancer.
- Without treatment, HIV weakens the immune system over time

The only way to know for sure is for you & your partners to get tested!

What is Ulcerative Colitis?

UC is an inflammatory bowel disease in which the inner lining of the large intestine & rectum become inflamed.

Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal pain, & blood in your stools.

An estimated 65% of people with UC experience some type of sexual dysfunction, whether it be physical or psychological.

Sexual dysfunction is more common in women.

Many UC symptoms that can make sex difficult are treatable, medication that can impact sex may be adjusted, & you can get a referral for therapy to help with anxiety & depression.

Although it may be difficult to have conversations about sex with your physician, these conversations are important to have because staying silent serves no one.

2 ways to start this dialogue include:
- Talking about symptoms that interfere with your sex life.
- Talking about sex as it relates to fertility.

Speak with your healthcare provider about these issues to improve your health & quality of life.

Normal causes for odors include:

Sweat

Abnormal causes include:
Incontinence
Forgotten tampons
Bacterial vaginosis
Trichomoniasis

Rare causes include:
Cervical cancer
Rectovaginal fistula

Vaginal odor prevention includes:
Mild cleansers
Avoiding douching
Eating a balanced diet
Staying hydrated
Wearing light, breathable clothing

You should see a health care professional if an abnormal odor persists & you are experiencing additional symptoms like pain, burning, itching, or unusual discharge.

In August 2025, The Department of Homeland security held a 3 day human trafficking training workshop with law enforcement & hospitality workers in preparation for the Super Bowl. The signs in every airport bathroom or hotel lobby multiply prior to every major sporting event. The belief that sporting events are hubs of human trafficking has been debunked by academics & oftentimes harm trafficking victims.

As the World Cup approaches, hosted across Canada, Mexico, & 11 major cities in the United States, it’s important to be aware of potential stings & your rights.

The New York Post reported that New York based escorts were receiving an increase in bookings. It’s important to remember that these organizations are not your friends, & while the temporary bump in engagement may benefit you financially, it puts you & other sex workers at risk. Although your phone is protected under your Fifth Amendment rights, police frequently disregard this & have forced individuals to unlock their phones.

Tip #1: Be aware of your digital footprint.
Use a VPN, proton, or alternative browser (Duck Duck Go). Consider using a separate phone for business purposes.

"Elderly people are more sexually active than most people think

Licensed psychologist Sidsel Louise Schaller, conducted in-depth interviews with 32 people aged between 65 & 85 in order to explore older adults’ relationships to their own sexuality.

According to her research, older people are rarely asked about their sex lives, & that both healthcare professionals & younger people tend to assume that the older generation does not engage in sex.

Another finding of this study is that sex education is needed both in youth & later in life, especially when it comes to doctors not doing their job properly, specifically when they do not tell their older patients about the side effects that certain medications can have on sexuality.

Sexuality is varied in older people, with some using sex to combat loneliness, others who use toys & medication, & some not interested in having sex at all for various reasons.

Older people should not feel any pressure to be sexually active in order to be seen as successful, & even if they are not sexually active, they can still have a sexuality that lives within them.

"A new strain of Shigella is disproportionately impacting queer men. Why?

What is Shigella?

Shigella is an increasingly common bacterial infection that can spread through feces, usually via water contamination, unwashed hands, & certain types of sexual contact (esp. anus to mouth AKA rimming).

A new strain with extensive drug resistance has been reported & the population being disproportionately affected is men who have sex with men. However, most cases don’t require treatment with antibiotics unless severe.

After someone receives treatment for Shigella, they can remain contagious for a few weeks, despite no longer have symptoms.

Recommendations to reduce the risk of transmission include:
- Not having sex with someone who has diarrhea.
- Not bottoming or getting rimmed by someone who has stomach issues or was recently treated.
- If topping, washing off your penis thoroughly before putting it in another person's mouth or anus.

The industry standard PASS Panel for 14-day work clearance requires 9 tests for 7 STIs, including hepatitis B & hepatitis C.

What are the risks associated with these pathogens?
Hep B is a short-term illness, but long-term chronic hepatitis B can cause cirrhosis (liver scarring), liver cancer, liver failure, & premature death.

Similarly, Hep C is a viral infection that affects the liver. If left untreated it can cause significant liver damage, & even death.

Is there a way to reduce the risk of transmission?

Any fluid transfer involving saliva, semen, &/or blood can provide for transmission, so it is important to follow sterilization protocols for surfaces, implements, & toys to avoid transmission.

Getting vaccinated against hep A & hep B can help protect against transmission.

There is currently no vaccine for hep C.

- Over 20% of young people report getting birth control information from social media
- Respondents answered only 5 out of 11 questions correctly on common contraception myths
- 1 in 3 say they don’t have enough information to choose a birth control method

Despite online access, knowledge gaps persist across sexual
health topics like contraception & STI awareness.

Misinformation around STIs can have serious public health consequences, such as the spread of common asymptomatic infections like Chlamydia & Gonorrhea, due to the lack of regular testing, or how undetected or untreated HPV infections can lead to long-term health problems.

The Babeland & Bedsider partnership seeks to develop a digital awareness campaign centered on medically reviewed, judgment-free education that focuses on birth control & how it extends into areas like STIs.

"4 Signs You Have a Bartholin's Cyst, Plus Treatment Options

Bartholin's cysts are fluid-filled sacs; they are common,
& can feel like a lump near your vaginal opening.

If it becomes enlarged or infected,
the following symptoms may occur:
Swelling & redness
Pain with sitting or walking
Pain with sexual intercourse
Vaginal discharge or vaginal pressure

A physician can diagnose a Bartholin's cyst with a pelvic exam; a doctor may also take a sample of the fluid to test for an STI, like gonorrhea.

For people 40 & older, a biopsy might be suggested, either to remove all or part of the cyst & may test it for cancer.

Small, uninfected Bartholin's cysts typically will not need treatment, but if they are larger or infected, treatments include draining & minor surgeries.

PASS Sunscreen 101

Where should I apply sunscreen?
Apply 2 fingers worth of sunscreen to your face & neck; reapply every 2 hours.
ANY part of your body can get a sunburn, especially areas that don’t typically see the sun, particularly the popular TikTok trend of “perineum sunning.”

Types of Sunscreen
Mineral: The ingredients label will typically include “titanium dioxide” or “zinc oxide.” Although many dermatologists recommend this for people with sensitive skin, it can often leave a white cast. Mineral sunscreens work as a “shield,” creating a physical barrier between UV rays & your skin.
Chemical: The ingredients label will not include titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Specific “filters” can vary between American, European, & Asian sunscreens. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays.

What Does SPF even mean?
SPF stands for “Sun Protection Factor” which refers to how much solar energy
(UV Rays) is required to produce a sunburn on protected skin.
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, “An SPF 30 allows about 3% of UVB rays to hit your skin. An SPF of 50 allows about 2% of those rays through.”

Everybody should be using sunscreen!
But there are some circumstances where it is especially important to remember
to reapply sunscreen:
Tattoos/ Tattoo Removal: Sun exposure can cause tattoos to fade.
Laser Hair Removal: Like tattoo removal, any darkening of the skin can cause lasers to lose effectiveness.
Herpes/ Cold Sores: Heat & sun exposure can cause breakouts. It’s important to remember to keep your medications close by in case of an outbreak.
