American memoirist, poet, and civil rights activist. She published 7 autobiographies, essays, poetry, credited with a list of plays, movies, and TV shows over 50 years. Received awards and more than 50 honorary degrees.
Angelou's autobiographies focus on her childhood and early adult experiences. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), tells of her life up to the age of 17 and brought her international recognition and acclaim.
She became a poet and writer after a string of odd jobs during her young adulthood. These included fry cook, sex worker, nightclub performer, Porgy and Bess cast member, Southern Christian Leadership Conference coordinator, and correspondent in Egypt and Ghana during the decolonization of Africa. Angelou was also an actress, writer, director, and producer of plays, movies, and public television programs. In 1982, she was named the first Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Angelou was active in the Civil Rights Movement and worked with Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. Beginning in the 1990s, she made approximately 80 appearances a year on the lecture circuit, something she continued into her eighties. In 1993, Angelou recited her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" (1993) at the first inauguration of Bill Clinton, making her the first poet to make an inaugural recitation since Robert Frost at the inauguration of John F. Kennedy in 1961.
With the publication of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Angelou publicly discussed aspects of her personal life. She was respected as a spokesperson for Black people and women, and her works have been considered a defense of Black culture. Her works are widely used in schools and universities worldwide, although attempts have been made to ban her books from some U.S. libraries.

Angelou's works have been labeled as autobiographical fiction, but many consider them autobiographies.

Dallas, TX – The Greg Dollgener Memorial AIDS Fund (GDMAF) is thrilled to announce that internationally-renowned singer and songwriter, David Archuleta, will headline MetroBall 18, taking place on June 6, 2025 at the iconic S4 Night Club in Dallas. This year’s MetroBall is extra special as it marks the 30th anniversary of GDMAF’s dedication to supporting those living with HIV/AIDS and promoting awareness.

MetroBall 18 will feature a dynamic evening of live music, entertainment, and a vibrant celebration of GDMAF’s 30-year legacy. The event will include performances by additional supporting artists, with more details to be announced soon.

In addition to the entertainment, we will have our uniquely excellent silent auction of items donated to us by local and international artist and businesses. Start your weekend off right. Target: Courts considering Donald Trump's attack on federal worker unions

In the dead of night, Donald Trump’s administration issued a disgraceful and retaliatory Executive Order declaring war on working people by denying their collective bargaining rights.

This order was a direct attack on the rights of one million patriotic American civil servants―targeted simply because they are members of a union that stands up to this administration’s harmful policies.

Trump’s order claims to be in response to national security concerns, but that’s plainly ridiculous. Elon Musk and Donald Trump don’t like that AFGE is standing up for their members against attempts to politicize the civil service, chaotically fire federal employees, and cut services to the American people. These federal workers have had union rights since before America went to the moon. A union nurse at the VA isn’t a threat to national security.

This attack on federal workers is an attack on everything the government does. It is an attack on Social Security, on our national parks, and on our veterans.

This is a fight that will be won in the courts. But that doesn’t mean that we should sit around and wait for judges to recognize the legal rights of these workers.

The American Federation of Government Employees is preparing immediate legal action and will fight relentlessly to protect the rights of union members, and all working Americans, from these unprecedented attacks. But this fight is bigger than any one union―or even the labor movement.

Donald Trump wants to be the kind of billionaire boss with total control over his employees. Their ideas aren’t valued, and their service is taken for granted. If Trump gets his way, he won’t stop. He and his billionaire buddies like Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk won’t stop until we’re all under his thumb.

Each week, I ask: What happened that we will still be talking about six months or a year from now?

This week, the answer is clear — Donald Trump’s effort, via executive order, to seize control over large swaths of the nation’s voting laws and election rules. To be clear, this order is illegal and unconstitutional. It will be challenged in court and likely blocked. But the fact that Trump issued it tells us a lot about his roadmap for the future.

Right now, the biggest check on Trump’s power is the courts. His administration is losing case after case. However, his real fear for 2026 and 2028 is that he and his preferred candidates will be removed from power through elections.

Trump has always seen elections as his greatest vulnerability. That’s why election denialism was at the core of his campaigns and remains central to his administration and the GOP. This recent executive order is his opening move to control who can register, who can vote and whose votes are counted and certified.

This threat to our election systems is the biggest risk to our democracy. That’s why it is the focus of the articles I have chosen this week.

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick has been vocal about his desire to ban all forms of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) products in Texas. Senate Bill 3, which he supports, aims to eliminate the sale of any consumable THC products, including popular items like delta-8 and delta-9 THC. This move comes in response to concerns that some products currently on the market exceed the legal THC limit of 0.3%, posing potential health risks. Patrick argues that the current laws are being exploited, leading to the sale of dangerously potent products. If passed, this bill would mark a significant shift in Texas’ approach to cannabis, aligning it more closely with its traditionally strict drug policies.

Patrick announced on December 4, 2024, that Senate Bill 3, will aim to ban all forms of consumable THC in the state. The legislation, sponsored by State Senator Charles Perry, responds to concerns over thousands of stores selling unregulated, potentially dangerous THC products. “Dangerously, retailers exploited the agriculture law to sell life-threatening, unregulated forms of THC to the public and made them easily accessible,” Patrick said in a statement. “These stores not only sold to adults, but they targeted Texas children and exposed them to dangerous levels of THC.” Patrick said there has been a surge over the past two years in stores selling these products.
