Electric vehicles (EVs) produce much lower emissions of greenhouse gases than internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs), but when in the life cycle of an ICEV does it make sense to replace it with an EV? Campbell and Geyer conducted life-cycle analyses of different vehicle types and concluded that the energy impact benefits from swapping an EV for an ICEV begin to accrue as early as the first day of the life of the ICEV, and that replacement early in the life cycle consistently provides reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Financial considerations will also affect when people choose to make the replacement, of course, but from the perspective of emissions, it is almost never too soon to switch. —Jesse Smith

The initiative sparked a furor when it emerged that NSF was diverting money from other research efforts to fund it. And in a radical shift by an agency best known for funding curiosity-driven research at universities, NSF has emphasized its desire to fund a new cadre of nonacademic players, leaving many academics wondering whether they should even bother to apply.

If the scientific community fails to address the influence of AI, then authentic research and validated findings will slow down to an expensive trickle into established knowledge, and the opportunities for flawed or fabricated information to be seen as reality will grow—all while AI profiteers cash in.

Our findings show that global methane abatement yields large net economic benefits. Achieving the Global Methane Pledge results in more than $1 trillion in annual avoided market damages by 2050. Benefits are greater in lower-income countries because of their higher vulnerability to climate change. Methane action also reduces climate risk, including the likelihood and severity of extreme damage outcomes (climate tail risk). It lowers the intensity of several key tipping points: For example, by 2050, the likelihood of Amazon rainforest dieback drops by 8% and Indian monsoon disruption by 13%. Even using conservative assumptions about costs, the benefit-cost ratio of methane action is at least three—rising to more than six when health cobenefits are included.

The authors have retracted this article. After publication it was brought to their attention that the luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) efficiency of 7.6% reported was incorrectly calculated. The correct value is 3.04%. This error arose because 40 cm2 (LSC edge area) was used as the device area instead of the correct area of 100 cm2 (LSC panel area). All authors agree with this retraction.
