Here’s an example of how we needlessly gender things, and how the gender we prescribe to things changes over time. This is an excerpt from an editorial from 1903, arguing that women are physically incapable of playing wind instruments and have no place in music professional ensemble performance.

But here a line should be drawn in the orchestra. Nature never intended the fair sex to become cornetists, trombonists, and players of wind instruments. In the first place they are not strong enough to play them as well as men; they lack the lip and lung power to hold notes which deficiency makes them always play out of tune. One discordant musician might not be noticed in an orchestra, but if you have several women members of a whole band composed of them, the playing verges on the excruciating. Another point against them is that women cannot possibly play brass instruments and look pretty, and why should they spoil their good looks? . . .

Do I think our theaters will eventually employ women musicians? No, most emphatically to that question. In the first place, very few musical directors would want them because women cannot be depended upon for rehearsing and the hard work demanded of musicians. Woman, lovely woman, is always to be admired, except when she is playing in an orchestra. She is certainly not in her own sphere, and any leader will find this out after he has had a few quarrels and instances of feminine disagreements.

I did, at some point, check out a review to see his style: his video about seeing Sun0))). He started out by explaining that to fully capture the emotion of the show, he was going to do zero editing. That was followed immediately by this frame; I had to find it to make sure I wasn't misremembering.

This is my favorite bad sentence. This is from The Riddle of the Traveling Skull, by Harry Stephen Keeler, about whom I can actually go on for a bit.

Text from a book:

To start, you can place a 5 r9c9. Since rows and columns add to 45, add the cages in r9 (24+7+5), which lets you place 9 for r8c1. You can follow that pattern upward, to place 9 initial numbers. After that, there's enough info to place r3c1&2, r3c8&c9, and r9c1&c2. That was a really fun one.

Folks acting like the pope is on our side remind me of this passage from Letter from a Birmingham Jail.

I must make two honest confessions to you, my Christian and Jewish brothers. First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.

Update: I made a bhuna using the whole spices, aromatics, and dry spices, to which I added the mushrooms, tofu, and soy sauce, and I let it cook a bit. I added some water, and now I'm letting it reduce while everything stews.
