Tariffs and soaring fuel and fertilizer costs are slamming farmers and rural areas hard, and those people have constituted the backbone of Trump's support. In a terrific piece for Bloomberg, National Journal alum Ronald Brownstein focuses on the impact of gas prices on those with pickup trucks, big gas tanks, and lousy mileage, pointing to research showing that 87% of pick-up truck owners are men, 74% are married, and 63% identify as Republicans. Spending a hundred bucks to fill up the tank on their truck will get their attention. While few are likely to defect and vote for Democrats, many more will just stay home.

It appears to me that the president has now reached a critical mass of problems that are threatening to take this election to a place that the 2026 map and the small number of competitive districts and Senate seats should not allow it to go. I confess this is a lot bigger than I expected, but here we are.

"At stake is at least $100 M ... from previous tax shenanigans" I always wince at the word 'shenanigans' used for Trump's vile acts. For me, the word suggests playfulness (def.1), not corruption (def2). Oh well. Language evolves ... (But can we not talk about 'this mercurial president'? 😵‍💫)

The individuals who spoke with Military.com are two clients of among more than 100,000 represented by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), whose client base is roughly 95% Christian.

The organization's co-founder, Mikey Weinstein:

fwiw, I don't see Trump's behavior during the Welker interview as a loss of control, but as a deliberate display of dominance: When challenged with facts, just loudly DENY, LIE, ATTACK, and HUMILIATE and then storm off. And for him, "America" has never included the concept of a loyal opposition.

"Meet the Press" today aired an interview host Kristen Welker taped Friday with President Donald J. Trump. It showed Trump losing control and walking out of the interview when Welker challenged his insistence that the 2020 presidential election and the recent California election were rigged.

Weirdly, he kept referring to the U.S. as "your" country when he was speaking to Welker, and to "your" elections. It was almost as if he was a foreign observer offering criticism of the U.S.

Former DHS secretary Kristi Noem used $38 billion of $45 billion appropriated for detention through September 2029 to buy warehouses and convert them to detention centers.

New DHS secretary Markwayne Mullin is considering selling a number of them. An Atlanta suburb has filed a lawsuit alleging that ICE paid more than five times the assessed value of a warehouse there.

Russell Vought, co-author of Project 2025, ... proposed last Thursday May 28 that political appointees in his office should have the final say over research grants, including those for the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and other governmental science agencies.

The proposal promises to root out "a 'woke' policy agenda that deliberately favor[s] certain identity groups over others." In addition to submitting scientific research to political approval, the new rules would also stop international research collaboration unless it was approved by political appointees.

Trump removed a bust of the civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. from the Oval this year. Now the desk is flanked by busts of Abraham Lincoln and Benjamin Franklin.

Trump added ornately framed mirrors to a door leading to other parts of the West Wing. It covers a peephole where the president's aides have, in the past, looked through to monitor the progress of meetings.

Now, if the door is closed, they can no longer see what is happening inside the Oval.
