Fed up with working at TeedoMart, Rey surprises herself by accepting a job as a “domestic intimacy provider” to reclusive tech CEO Kylo Ren. She’s nervous about the job and all the intimacy it entails, but she needs the money to pay off student loans from the degree she didn’t even get to finish.

Ben Solo—known to the outside world as Kylo Ren, CEO of Dyad Energetics—hasn’t left his Chandrila estate in over a decade. On the advice of his therapist (sort of), he hires a young woman for companionship, though he’s braced for her to quit and run away the instant she sees his face.

Instead, two lonely souls find kinship, belonging, and the opportunity to heal together. If only their arrangement didn’t involve an eighty-page contract, a six-figure salary, and a potential expiration date....

With a deep breath, she swipes to accept the call when Rose’s face appears on the screen. “Hey.”
“Rey!” Rose is at home, and the sight of the familiar surroundings—concert posters on the walls, squashy corduroy sofa, counters chipped by academic generations of grad students—sends a pang of longing through Rey. “How’s your weekend going?”
“Okay,” she says automatically, then corrects herself. “Good, actually.”
Rose’s smile is even more achingly familiar than the apartment behind her. “I’m glad. Is he still being polite?”
“Yeah.” He even made conversation for a combined total of ten minutes yesterday. “I’m settling in, sort of.”
She gives Rose a quick tour of her room, letting her friend ooh and aah over the elegant four-poster bed and antique clawfoot tub. When she resettles on the loveseat and flips the camera back around, Rose’s smile takes on a mischievous edge. “So … how’s the sex?”

Ben stands, and she expects another of his swift exits—but he pauses by the door. In the low light, she can just glimpse his hand gripping the doorframe.
“Good night, Rey,” he murmurs.
And then he’s gone, and she stares at the shadowed doorway for long moments. Until she takes a gasping breath of air, because her faulty autonomic nervous system seems to have lagged upon hearing him say her name for the first time.
To her muddled mind, it sounded just the way he wrote it: a rich, bold consonant, savored before a long, swooping vowel.
Or maybe the swooping sensation was stupid, cliché butterflies in her stomach, and she needs to get a grip.

She perches on one of the velvet armchairs and props the book up on her knees. Within a few pages, she’s absorbed enough to startle at the sound of Ben’s voice: “My last meeting ended early, so—”
Rey scrambles for the book before it falls off her lap and glances quickly between Ben’s tall frame in the doorway and the grandfather clock in the corner of the room, showing a quarter to eight. “You were in a meeting?”
He follows her gaze to the clock and lifts one shoulder in a stiff shrug. “Thyferra is three hours behind Chandrila.”
“Oh.” She takes in his charcoal slacks and button-down, the collar askew as if he’s just pulled off a tie. Only the topmost button is undone; before she can stop it, the thought flashes through her mind that he’d be more comfortable with another unbuttoned, she could help—
Rey shoves that thought away as quickly as she can. “We can, um, start the movie now if you want. I’ll borrow this”—she holds up the book—“for later, if that’s okay?”
Ben steps into the room—one, two, three slow paces bringing him within a meter of her. Just far enough to avoid looming, but close enough that she can see the the warm, curious gold of his eyes. “Is that Starlight Renegades?”

“I mean, you didn’t define the scale very well.” On the other end of the line, Rose snorts. “But … yeah. That part is … not a problem.”

Seated on the couch next to Rey, Rose jabs her finger at the screen. “Girl, look at the organizations he donates to! Chandrilan Civil Liberties Union? Padmé Amidala Foundation? Corewide Climate Action? Save the Porgs? This isn’t the donation list of some incel techbro.”
“There are probably incel techbros who like porgs,” Rey points out.
“Yeah, but not ones who also support progressive immigration policy and women running for office.” Rose raises her eyebrows triumphantly, urging Rey to concede to her irrefutable logic.
“That does seem unlikely, I guess. Unless he’s three separate people in a very expensive trench coat.”
Rose snorts. “Well, there aren’t any pictures of him online, so I guess you won’t know for sure until you meet him.”
Rey frowns. “There aren’t any pictures?” She’d felt odd searching the internet for details about a man whose privacy she’d just signed an ironclad NDA to protect and had decided to leave any internet stalking up to Rose—who apparently had no such compunctions.

Meanwhile, Rey starts eating her leftover crisps one-handed, keeping her other hand on his thigh—just high enough to be very, very promising without making him too distracted to drive. "Do you want one?" she asks.

"Nah." Ben glances at her before the light turns green. She's getting crisp dust all over his car. She's a menace. Her friends are annoying 90% of the time and embarassing another 9.9%. She makes him so, so happy—more than he ever thought possible. So much he could get drunk off it, no alcohol required. He doesn't need energy drinks anymore, either. With her in his arms—or, more often, sprawled over him in an attempt to conquer the entire king-sized bed—he can actually sleep at night. She's—she's everything he doesn't deserve, but maybe someday he'll come close.

"I'll eat when we get home, sweetheart."

"Okaaaaay, speaking of sleep," Rey interrupts, loud enough for the table to hear. "This guy has an old man bedtime, so we should get going."

"Uh-huh. Suuuuure." Finn looks almost as disgusted as when vodka Red Bull was mentioned.

Ben just smirks, ignoring the 'old man' comment in favor of getting everything he wants.

"You guys are leaving already?" Poe is back, balancing three drinks and a can of sparkling water. "But—"

"Thanks for the round, but we gotta go!" Rey lets go of Ben's hand to grab her beer and chug half of it before plucking her half-empty crisp bag and Ben's sparkling water off the table, passing both to him.

"Dude—" Poe looks helplessly at Finn (steadfastly avoiding eye contact) and Rose (giggling into another inexplicably pink G&T).

"See you this weekend!" Rey tugs Ben out the door.

"You are such a brat," he grumbles. "'Old man bedtime,' really? Are you trying to get spanked tonight?"

It's Rey's turn to smirk at him, effervescent in the warm glow of streetlights. "Maybe."

He's too distracted by her freckles, the hint of foam clinging to her upper lip, the way her tongue darts out to lick it, just—just her—to think of a response before he feels a hand slap his ass and Rey takes off running towards the car.

He catches her halfway there, dropping the sparkling water in favor of sweeping her up in both arms as she shrieks and giggles. (The crisps are tucked in his jacket pocket, though, because Rey will want to eat them on the way home.)

"Brat," he says again. He kisses her freckles, her nose, her lips. "I'm lucky you like me."

"I think you mean that the other way around." Rey kisses him back until a passerby wolf-whistles at them.

"No." He kisses her once more. "I'm the lucky one."

Rey arches an eyebrow, wiggling in his arms. "If you take me home and fuck me into the mattress like you promised, then we'll both be lucky tonight."

Every night, he thinks, once he's pulling out of the parking lot and towards the flat that is technically his, although Rey hasn't slept at her own place in over a month. I'm lucky every night I get to spend with you, in any way.

“This round’s on me!” Rather than asking Finn to move, Poe fully stands up on the booth seat and climbs over his boyfriend. Ben winces at the thought of Dameron’s dirty shoes on the—okay, admittedly less than clean—pleather of the pub seats. “Solo, you want anything?”

“Just sparkling water.” Ben tells himself that he doesn’t care if Rey’s friends think he’s boring. “I’m driving Rey home.”

“Awww.” Rose downs the last drops of her … G&T, Ben thinks? But why is it pink? “What do you like drinking, Ben? So we know for game nights.” She flashes him a bright smile that seems wholly genuine.

Ugh. It’s hard not to like Rose Tico. She’s the most welcoming of the bunch and the only one as competitive as Ben about pub trivia.

“Um, red wine? A nice Cab or Bordeaux, not a Pinot.” Though the varietal probably doesn’t matter much if the wine is mediocre to begin with. He should’ve given an answer that won’t doom him to choking down a bottom-shelf California red over debates about Uno rules. Who even fucking plays Uno as an adult, anyway—

Rey snorts. “Tell them what you used to drink.”

“No.” Ben steals one of her salt-and-vinegar crisps, ignoring her pretend-outraged squawk. It turns into more of an (adorable) squeak when his hand slides further up her thigh under the table.

Unfortunately, it’s not distraction enough, especially when Finn leans forward eagerly. “What?”

Ben squeezes Rey’s thigh in warning.

She just smirks at him. Brat. “Vodka Red Bull,” she tells the table.

Rose makes a face. Finn, cementing his place at the top (bottom?) of Ben’s list of Least Favorite People In The Friend Group, says, “Ewwww, man, really?” out loud.

Ben just glares.

"He never got enough sleep. Hence, disgusting energy drinks." Rey combs her fingers through the hair at the nape of his neck, so he can't be upset with her. Not that he really would be anyway.

But, on the other hand, it's fun to pretend. Leaning down just enough to whisper in her ear, he murmurs, "I won't need energy drinks to fuck you into the mattress for making fun of me tonight."

With his hand still on Rey's upper thigh, he can feel her muscles clench.

"Or maybe I should just spank you," he continues, too quietly for anyone else to hear in the rowdy pub. "Until you're ready to apologize for being a brat so I'll let you co—"

The man narrows his eyes at her and leans over the counter. “I know there’s a button you can push.”
“There’s no—”
“I know there’s a button!” he shouts. “I read about it on TV!”
It’s not that this is the worst customer interaction Rey has ever had. Frankly, it wouldn’t even rank in the top ten. But her supply of patience and willingness to put up with awful people for a job she hates … well, it seems that’s run out completely.
“THERE—IS—NO—FUCKING—BUTTON!” she shouts back.
It’s just her luck that Sam Teedo—beady eyes, receding hairline, fragile male ego and all—chooses that moment to wander out of the back office, scratching his ass through a set of ugly camo pants.
“Hey, Niima!” he barks. “What’s going on?!”
“Your employee is trying to cheat me!” the man cries. “I demand that she be fired!”
Teedo’s unlikely to actually fire her, given that she’s the most competent and reliable worker he’s ever had. But something inside Rey has snapped, and clinging to a modicum of self-respect and dignity becomes as important to her survival as shelter, food, and water.
Before anyone can say anything else, she yanks the TeedoMart polo over her head and tosses it on the floor, leaving her in just the tank top she keeps between her skin and the scratchy fabric. “You know what? I quit.”
