No, sorry, what I meant is that as a british officer your standard pistol would be a revolver. Churchill should have used a Webley .455 Mk IV revolver, but he clearly thought the clip-loaded mauser was a better choice.

Winston Churchill at the Boer War times, you can see the lanyard. In his memoirs he says that he preferred the Mauser to the sword, in close combat. This also means that you were expected to be proficient at shooting with your left.
