Sixteen-year-old Nat Grant would rather spend her time talking about literally anything else.
Nat’s father runs the Extraterrestrial Defense Initiative and every year, he uproots the family to another small town in the middle of nowhere. The most recent move brings the Grant family to the rural desert town of Scorpion Springs.
Despite everything, Nat has a good feeling about this move — that is till one of her classmates doesn’t return from a routine abduction and her whole world is thrown into chaos. Along with her dutiful older brother Trent, who’s convinced that he can crack the extraterrestrials’ motives, and her new friends, Nat embarks on a quest to find her missing classmate.
But as she treks into abandoned mineshafts on the outskirts of a ghost town and explores the depths of Scorpion Springs’ secret government research facility, Nat starts to question everything she’s ever been told.
For one, aliens have secretly been living among humans for decades. And the government covered that up. For another, psychics are also a thing. The more secrets and conspiracies Nat uncovers lurking amongst the Saguaros, the more she realizes that Scorpion Springs might be the key to unraveling her own family’s complicated past — a past that she’s been desperately trying to forget.

According to the Scorpion Springs town website, the “spring” part of Scorpion Springs didn’t come from any particular fresh water well. Instead, it was because every spring, the town became completely flooded with Arizona Silver-tipped Stinger Scorpions, as they emerged from their winter hideaways.

There were some theories as to why this was; surprisingly, only a few of them had anything to do with extraterrestrials.

I read the scorpion facts out loud, scrolling through my phone in the back seat of the car. It was cramped, duffle bags shoved under the seats, a cooler with some juice boxes and snacks wedged in the middle seat. Outside, I glimpsed the dusky orange landscape that we would call home for however long. We’d come from the tall pines of Oregon, so the dry and rocky mountains were a surprise, but as we’d driven on the desert highway for miles and miles, I started to like how everything seemed to be painted over with an orange sheen.

I also liked the possibility of sharing a backyard with strange and potentially dangerous creatures like Diamondback rattlesnakes and the Arizona Silver-tipped Stinger Scorpion.

Hunchback is my favorite Disney movie. It's gorgeously animated. The songs are haunting (for the most part). The characters are dynamic. The story takes on a LOT (especially for a G-rating!) I'll forgive the gargoyles
