Do you mean it was priced like this (see photo)? That was purchased in 1980, after the pounds decoupled, and that was Irish pounds. 🤷‍♀️🤔

Inside leaf of my copy of the First Book of the Iliad by Pope, purchased at Kenny’s in Galway in 1980. It came from Cardinal Newman’s library, and has his name written on the title page. The price is tidily written in pencil as £16.50, which meant that many Irish pounds.

Our otherwise spacious house has 7’ 10” ceilings upstairs and 7’ 8” downstairs. This has at times limited our furniture choices. 😏 James has his shop in the (downstairs) garage, where the ceiling height is lowered even further by the rollup door. Fortunately, he mostly works with small pieces. 😊

A set of Linos pieces. Each one is approximately 1.5 inches long, with a 3/4 inch cross section. They are made of dark and light wood, six each. They are shown with a 6-sided die and score counters.

Lupita has the uncanny ability to wear any color, and have it look like the perfect color for her. I know of no one else on Earth with that kind of splendor.

Social Security and previous generations’ outsize pensions & savings have given us (for now) a fairly low elder poverty rate. As Gen X creeps up on retirement, I predict that’s gonna change, esp. for any family where the elders in retirement now don’t manage to pass anything down. 😒

Poverty rates by age group. Elders decreased from 25% in 1970 to just under 10% in 2024. It’s been mostly level for a while.

We got a new house in 1975. In 1976, we decorated my bedroom. Two walls were light sky blue, and the other two were a Colonial-style wallpaper with stripes & floral motifs. I had a Colonial style white bed frame, and my Mom & sister cross-stitched a quilt for it. We were all in. 🇺🇸 🫤

It’s pretty wild that he has decided to compare himself to Teddy Roosevelt, a man who certainly would have despised him. Teddy was anti-corruption, anti-monopoly, and came from old money. A crass self-enriching grifter like Trump would have been shown the door at the Roosevelts. Roosevelt:

There can be no crime more serious than bribery. Other offenses violate one law while corruption strikes at the foundation of all law. Under our form of Government all authority is vested in the people and by them delegated to those who represent them in official capacity. There can be no offense heavier than that of him in whom such a sacred trust has been reposed, who sells it for his own gain and enrichment; and no less heavy is the offense of the bribe giver. He is worse than the thief, for the thief robs the individual, while the corrupt official plunders an entire city or State. He is as wicked as the murderer, for the murderer may only take one life against the law, while the corrupt official and the man who corrupts the official alike aim at the assassination of the commonwealth itself. Government of the people, by the people, for the people will perish from the face of the earth if bribery is tolerated. The givers and takers of bribes stand on an evil pre-eminence of infamy. The exposure and punishment of public corruption is an honor to a nation, not a disgrace.
The shame lies in toleration, not in correction.... If we fail to do all that in us lies to stamp out corruption we can not escape our share of responsibility for the guilt. The first requisite of successful self-government is unflinching enforcement of the law and the cutting out of corruption.

Who woulda thunk? 😏 So glad I sold a few shares I had, at the end of last Summer. 😏 Remember kids, “line has gone up” is the time to sell, not buy. 😁

A 5-year chart of Oracle stock values, with a circle and arrow at its high-water mark of around $300 last September. It is now trading at less than half that, at $142.

We did deserve better! Because I didn’t invite my Dad, my Mom “couldn’t” attend my wedding🙄. Weirdly, they paid for my older sister’s plane ticket to come out, and she spent the whole time complaining about him. 😒 Payne & Marie stood in as bride’s family for me. 😊

In Father’s Day celebration of my own “Dad skills”, let me present to you - a newly hung towel hook. Turns out that 25 years ago, the contractors wimped out & used drywall anchors for all the towel bars, etc. and they have all failed. 🙄 This is screwed right into a stud! 💪 😁

A shiny chrome towel/bathrobe hook on a cream colored wall. It will not come down unless the hook breaks, or an earthquake destroys the house!

I just put a few listings up on Facebook Marketplace, so if anybody in Seattle needs some lovingly cared for “vintage” furniture (i.e. bought new by me over 20 years ago), HMU. 😁 The first listing is for a solid wood Canadian-made desk: www.facebook.com/commerce/lis...

A solid wood desk, by Baronet, a Canadian furniture manufacturer active from about the 1950s to 2007. Cherry finish desktop and hutchtop, with a more matte charcoal-brown finish on the rest. Purchased at (now-defunct) Seattle boutique Kasala in 1995. So it’s “vintage” now. Near perfect condition, listed at $500, since comparable new desks go for $1000 or more.

When my husband's grandmother died, we inherited a few shares of a *lot* of different companies. We decided to let a lot of them just ride, even the vice stocks. I just noticed an oddity in Philip Morris - did everyone start smoking again when Biden dropped out? 🤔

Completion of 'zine, which gets you to a guinea pig, but nothing like what was promised on the cover! 😁

Step 4 floppy ears

Potato shape with completely simplified face now has a slanted U-shape on the near side, and a little blob off the far side, for the ears.

Step 5: Bird feets

The potato has now acquired three shallow U-shapes with 3 simple curved lines, to create the legs and feet - the front and back legs on the near side, and the front leg on the side away from the viewer. Adding the two on the near side require erasing little sections of the original potato outline.

Step 6: WHEEK!!

The cartoon guinea pig now has its flappy ears extended, and the inverted V mouth is now a large black diamond shape. The title "WHEEK!!" is in a jagged loud-noise indicating word balloon.

Step 7: Get treats

“Not welcome” is a perfectly fine way to translate “persona non grata” from the Latin. 🙂

The wiktionary entry for gratūs in Latin, showing it means “pleasing, acceptable, agreeable, welcome”.

So, a “persona non grata” is a person who is not welcome (or acceptable).

Here in Seattle, our minimum wage is hiked *automatically* every year, based on hard data. We are an expensive place, but if you’d like to see how much wages should have been rising everywhere - proportionally - to keep pace, a look at our trend is useful:

A list of how Seattle’s minimum wage has risen, starting in 2020, and finishing with 2026.
In 2020, smaller employers had to pay $15.75/hr and larger employers $16.39/hr.

The rate disparity is gradually phased out, and now, in 2026, all employers must pay a minimum of $21.30/hr.

My husband tells me that one’s a “bit much”. 😁 But he did make this for me:

A Lego rendition of the Ca’ d’Oro in Venice. A marble effect is created on the facade by intermixing new & old, stained white Lego bricks. It is very faithful to the original, and features creative repurposing - the finials on top are made using triple ice-cream scoops.
